Has anyone sanded the interior plastics to paint them?
Looking to spruce up the interior and unfortunately a lot of it can't be wrapped because it is textured. Has anyone sanded it down to paint it? if so what grit and prep did you use?
Easy to do, just depends if you want to keep the "bumpy" textured look or not. If you sand it down it is very difficult to get that look back. Make sure you use a good primer meant for plastic and you should be good. The only issue with paint is that it starts to fake off in a few years and is not very durable long term unless you are very careful. What panels do you want to paint? You could also warp panels with various fabrics, I did a lot of mine in alcantara and love it. I always thought the plastic looked cheap but love my S2K like no other car I have ever had. I have had some really nice cars but always found the S interior needed a bit more to make it upscale. Here is an example of wrapping a panel (these are my window pillars, easy to do and lasts much longer than paint.
If you do decide to sand them/paint them do yourself a huge favour and invest in a orbital sander that can sand small areas. Doing this by hand will never yield a perfect result unless you have nothing but time on your side.
As for your question, start with a really aggressive grit to get rid of the bumps, I would use 100 grit and move down to 200 then to 400 maybe, this will get rid of the majority of the scratches you will create from sanding. then prime the panels as discussed above and use 400-600 to get that primer smooth. Paint and then you can wetland the paint to get it super glossy with something like 1500-2000 grit. I would clear the panel after that as well if you want perfection. Painting it correctly is a lot of work but can look amazing.
