Its the ratio of the gear in the differential, also known as the final drive gear. The bigger the number the more torque is applied to the wheels. Pretty much makes all your gears shorter.

4.77s are too low with big horsepower. Good off the line but about 3rd gear you get passed by the big boys with taller gearing.

ever played any Gran turismo? Well if so, remember the screen where you could adjust your gears? Well remember the final drive bar? Move it one way the gears get shorter (4.77) move it the other way the gears get longer but you have more top speed (4.10) haha thats how I learned back in the day
