Default ACT or Competition Clutch?

I'm buying a new clutch and these two are what i'm looking at. I'm not going to go over 400hp with the mase kit, i want to stay 350-400 tops.

I don't daily my car so a stiff clutch isnt a problem but i also want a smooth engagement so no puck clutches please. They eat flywheels and i don't want to swap to an aftermarket flywheel. Ap1 is fine.

Alot of people use the ACT with good results and i haven't found many who have the Competition clutch. I had a clutchmasters on my old car for over 80,000 miles with no problems but they are alot more money and i'm cheap.

help me decide. i've searched, this could be usefull for alot of users in the future as well.

thanks

The poll results show the obvious. ACT FTW. ACT also has a longer history and good reputation in the market.

I do however strongly recommend you getting a good aftermarket flywheel.

I currently have the ACT HDSS kit mated w/ a Fidanza flywheel. Had it for about 3 years and 50K mi now and still holds althought I can notice that the clutch disc has probably 30% left but still doesnt slip. I didnt track my car but it has seen the strip and green light launches several times.

Pedal is very stiff compared to stock. This is due to the Heavy Duty pressure plate in the kit. Engagement is smooth.

look into SPEC clutch kits. i was looking into ACT stuff for a long time, i heard different things about them but spec seems the way to go. there stages of clutches seem very good and great longitivity from what they say. you can go stage 1 with 320 lb ft which is full face street disc. and stage 2 holds 399 lb ft and is still full face disc. im going to purchase one soon.

Have you personally tried the Spec or ACT units?

why do you recomend this when lots of people go with the ap1 flywheel?

i had a fidanza on two previous cars with great results and am tempted to pick up their s2000 flywheel so i don't have to resurface mine causing a delay in installing the clutch.

i really don't have time to wait on the machine shop

thanks

Its just the smart thing to do since you will have the tranny apart from the block. Its an enhancement over stock.

i have tried SPEC yet, i will purchase one within the next couple months and let you know how it is. i was informed from someone who has a SPEC and said no clutch chatter or anything like that. smooth engagement, no chatter and lasts long.

I know this is a bit off topic from the OP's question, but has anyone had good experiences with the SOS clutch with an AP1 flywheel? This would be used for a KW kit on an AP2.

I just finished breaking in my SOS clutch / Competition Flywheel while my car was N/A. Pedal feel is close to stock, engagement is just a little quicker (nowhere near the on/off feeling of a puck disc). I'm almost done installing my SOS Stage 2 kit, and it shouldn't have a problem with around 400whp. Send me a PM if you have any other questions.
