My mechanic was the one who recommended the conversion, because he believes the difference between the two set-ups is significant. Plus he said with the AP2 setup I could use a 4.34 diff gearing, which is better than the 4.44, commonly used on the AP1. Honestly, I don't understand any of this.
Honestly, please do not spend any money whatsoever on your mechanic's recommendation!

Leave yer shit as is and don't fricking worry about it.

That's my official recommendation...

Actually my transmission feels solid, but my rear end feels a little loose. Is that normal? Maybe I just wasn't paying attention before.

Its pretty common knowledge I thought that the majority of ap1 trans had the 1-2 gear grind in various conditions. I know mine has and its not from abuse. I definitely think it’s worth the change to the ap2 trans if the ap1 is due for replacement. I like the gear spread better for a street car as well. 1-4 gears works out to giving you a simulated 4.20 gear ratio. And the overdriven 6th gives you a bit lower rpm for long hyw trips. Best of both worlds with a superior shifting trans.

OP sez:
"I don't think anything is wrong with my transmission."

Based on that, I say save the time/money/effort.

If you do go ahead with the swap (like metioned above) keep the AP1 flywheel (or aftermarket)

If there isnt anything wrong with it and your happy with your current tranny and shift points I wouldnt reccomend doing it.

Now after youve researched a bit more and you decide it still sounds good it does seem like a very nice mod ( I will swap to the AP2 tranny myself someday when the time is right )

I agree with that. Its a worthy upgrade, but I dont think its worth knocking yourself out over prematurely.

I done this mod as well as the input shaft broke on my ap1 tranny. To me it was a huge difference. And side by side with an ap1 with same mods you have the edge. Also it has since benefited me on the track as well with the extra gearing. The biggest difference is the smoothness of shifting its like coursing a hot knife through butter
