Battery Box Blues
thanks for the BCI group chart. thinking about going with a battery that has side connections, since it is in the back, as you pointed out, we can use any battery we want as long as it has the required cranking amps.
Maybe you should just go with a Braille battery and keep it up front? That's what Eric runs (white AP1 w/ red roll bar, runs with CCR and SCR). I wouldn't really see the overwhelming advantage of running it in the trunk versus a smaller in the front.
Imve been considering doing this myself. I don't have a spare tire so persoanlly I would have a battery placed in it's place, it also helps to offset the weight of the driver. The only thing stopping me is the battery and the box, as you said its difficult to find a box to fit. I have a welder and various saws. So I would just weld up a box from aluminum, and why won't aluminum hold up to acid? But I plan to just run a lighter dry cell battery like braille and use a simple strap or basic bolt in clamp thing as it's much easier!
Well I spent the weekend making half a battery box like S-Factor did. Made it from aluminim which I found out was not cheap, it was 70 bucks for the raw material. I literally hand made the box, like with a hack saw, etc. Hated to cut a hole in the truck but I did. After all that and running the cable to back, which again ain't cheap, installing a fuse, redoing the wiring up front, I would not do it. I wish I just bought a high priced small battery like Mister X suggested and left it up front. I think I still have to fab a air tight cover over the battery and vent it to the outside for SCCA reasons, so I still ain't done and have no idea how to make a cover that is air tight with the cables going thru it that I can take off if I need to. Some projects are better not done and this was one of them. Although it is cool to look under the hood and not see a battery.
Thanks for the solid! The hole is touch big but the flange still covers it with more than a 1/2" all around. I am going to pop rivet the box to car, helping to make it more structurally sound, probably not much but it can't hurt. I will post a few more pics as I finish up.
I'm a big fan of silicone when sealing and attaching stuff up. That is what I used to attached mine. Apply all around and put something heavy, in this case the battery, to press down on it until it dries solid.
I even used silicone to seal any open gaps within the edges on the battery box.
Good job so far, man.
