Which do you want...maximum performance or maximum sound? Once you figure out which is more important to you, there is your answer. I choose power for myself, my exhaust is plenty loud.
maximum performance ofcourse..

CAI intake sound is the best especially at vtec cross over makes the car scream. The difference in power between the two is so minimal it doesnt really matter, neither one will really get you any real power. I would say one of the biggest factor as well may be that you have much less risk of hyrdolock if you are running the snorkel but it all depends on how much rain your area sees and how much you drive in it.

When using those ebay snorkels with the factory airbox is the hood clearance? any modifications needed to fit?
the hood does rub the top of the ebay snorkle. ive also read on here that it does the same thing on the spoon snorkle

. The power difference is maybe 2-3HP??? You will not notice the difference between the two without a dyno to show you the difference. Get the one you like the best

Unless heat soak is a problem for you, then its allot more then 3hp. Snorkel prevents some of this, but better yet will fix it once you start moving. Open filter under the hood is just not a good trade off for performance. Driving around in the summer time, especially slower speeds, stop and go where heat soak is a real problem is where the snorkel and factory box will really become noticeable. Also better perfoming on the highway do to the forced induction attribute. The only thing a open filter "cold air intake" is good for is sound, if you like that and a dress up peice. They suck chunks 75% of the time otherwise, thats my experience with them.

Or you could go with a cooling plate. The one that grooved up and guides air into your stock air box. I like those, but no $$$

Yep the cooling plate is a nice addition to the snorkel or without. Everything helps and works together.

A real cold air intake would have the filter right behind the bumper and away from the engine bay. The intakes that sit in the engine bay are short rams. The true CAI would not have the problems you mention just a high risk of hydrolock. It is not just for dress up and sound.
