CAI Vs. Snorkel
Think about this: Have you ever seen a track-ready car by say spoon or mugen or j's or amuse ever run a CAI that goes under the wheel well? ALL those cars run snorkles. Most people have proved that the stock airbox is very well made and hard to make any gains aftermarket, a snorkle will only improve it.
A cold air intake will give you at MOST 3whp, which you will never be able to tell other than a dyno. It will help you with heat soak in traffic, but after you get moving its much much less effective than cold air being rammed right into the intake box.
Also the temperature of the pipe doesnt matter as the air is not inside it long enough for it to be effected. Air goes through it so fast theres no time for the air to get hot from the pipe.

the K&N fipk shouldn't be prone to hydrolock or heatsoak cause it has that heatshield that goes around it correct?

My vote goes to the snorkel only because the response you get at speed is great!
I use to have a Spoon snorkel and I loved how the throttle felt after 50mph. However, my opinion is biased since I've never had an AEM/Injen intake.
I actually preferred the snorkel over my Mugen-style intake that I once had. I missed the snorkel so much that I got myself J's intake afterwards.

How well does this enclosure's "seal" mate up with the underside of the hood? Does anyone know if someone out there has ever tried to mate up an FIPK with a snorkel of any kind?

i personally have a aem v2 and the sound it makes at idle and WOT is rediculous. but the snorkel on the other hand is on many race built s2000's. either way you should be satisfied. but most snorkels that i have installed (j's, spoon, etc..) the stock hood and some seibon hoods had to be trimmed to fit so it wouldnt break or scratch the snorkel. Even if you get the j's front bumper theres trimming to be done with a snorkel. but good luck i like both but prefered the CAI

Just to confuse the OP more
When you introduce a snorkle, you will have some kinks, more bends and extra turbulence.
CAI eliminate that and will produce more HP not to mention a killer sound.

Have you seen the aem cai? It has alot of bends and it actually makes a u-shape. I would personally go the snorkel route, with the k&n fipk being my second choice. The fipk is very simliar to oem as its in the same location, same pipe, and also includes a "box" using the bottom of the hood as the top. Not to mention the sound

no you wont... air is still being sucked through the same filter and through the same pipe so there is no extra bends. this will only cause a problem if there were bends AFTER the filter. its just like oem except theres being air rammed in there keeping it under pressure.

i dont know about that one, but snorkel isnt a bad route to go. either route the horsepower differences and/or advantages you will gain will be minimal, so whatever looks best to you i'd go with that. not to mention pricing. i got my aem shipped for $278 brand new. most snorkels are over $300 without shipping. Spoon snorkel you will pay an arm and a leg for but i am not hating on snorkels. they do work and they look damn good under the hood
