I always wondered if anyone tried to custom fab a plastic rear window in the top of the soft top as a sunroof

Negcamber, that's a cool idea but I think it would require too many parts and structurally quite difficult to make. Perhaps even be costlier than a used OEM HT.

My idea is to make a kit out of this. The reason I want to make it from several parts is due to shipping. I see this as one of the drawbacks of current hardtops along with weight, particularly the OEM one requiring a hoist or a buddy to mount.

If you think about it, the softtop is nothing more than fabric stretched over a frame. My idea is simply to use plastic-based sheet material as a covering and to mold the necessary structural ribs in place. I don't think it is particularly hard to do but like most have mentioned, accurate fitment would be challenging.

CooperS2K, I've thought about that also but at the moment, my plastic window is in great shape but I am sure one can easily rivet a plastic window in place and also engineer the top to fold safely.

Just make sure you tint that giant moonroof!

Or buy some sunscreen!

I'm assuming it will be far lighter then a regular hardtop? I'll buy it for that reason alone, definitely keep us updated.

So far I like it. Keep pushing if it was inexpensive with great quality it would definitely be a winner.

Go for it. fabricating parts for your ride is what customizing is about-----originallity. making this top will be a challenge, but may i suggest that i would tint that top part of that clear roof otherwise it will get hotter than hell in that car. also it will magnify the sun rays and destroy your interior. good luck, like to see the finished project.
