Default Exhaust help wanted

The full extent of my mods will be a K&N gen II intake, and an exhaust.

With this in mind, is it worth paying out a considerable amount of money for a test pipe and header?

Or is this money wasted?

I'm thinking of buying a mugen exhaust, J's racing header with berk test pipe.

Bearing in mind i have no other mods planned, - shall i just go for the intake and exhaust alone?

that's really gonna be up to you. intake and exhaust are generally considered "sound" mods, but will make a bit of power (maybe 2-3hp). if you want a good jump in hp(like 10-15), header and test pipe along with a good intake and exhaust will help you acheive that.

personally, im having trouble justifying paying 500-600 for an exhaust. whatever i get (quietish dual, invidia v4 or hks, t1r 63 sparrow) wont really make/loose enough power to notice, so id basically be paying just for sound/looks. im still debating.

hope i helped a bit.

Agree.....if you want to make power and want to spend your money well, I/H/E arent really the way to go especially if you get the crazy high end stuff..

Recommend a tune after it all as well (Vafc)... But if you just want to mod your car and understand that the optimistic 10hp you get will be very unnoticeable, go for what looks good, sounds good, or you get a good deal on.

*Edit: Test pipe will be your best bang for your buck - just research the CEL fixes and possibly legality issues. TP I would HIGHLY recommend.

Hi James

the intake and exhaust will be for the sound, - and the expensive mugen is chosen because of looks, not too lairy and the fact that it won't *loose* power.

If I could be sure I'll get an extra 10-15bhp with the full head and test pipe as you suggest.... - as opposed to 2-3bhp with just the intaken an exhaust.. - i will probably go for it.

But will these power gains really be the case without an ECU mod?

Thanks

You may get close to the 10hp mark but without a tune it will be hard to get the full benefit .

Remember by doing these mods you will also be losing a considerable amount of weight from the car and in a car with very low TQ that has an impact as well

Good point about the weight... - i guess I'll have a look to see how much a remap will cost...

any other comments very welcome... - long and short of my question I guess is; will the power/torque increase noticable? will I be happy!?

such a tough question. if your ultimate goal is just a few mods, get a tune over anything else. header, tp and exhuast will yield maybe 10-15 hp, but thats really with a tune from a vafc, emanage ult, aem, or hondata.

to be honest, the best mod you will notice at the track would be a rev limiter increase to 8500 and vtec lowered to 5k. with this, you will not fall out of vtec on a 1-2 shift, and you will cross the qtr in fourth instead of fifth. i promise a 2-3 tenth improvement just from this!

i have al the mods your lookin at expect for the exhuast. i have been sweatin berks exhuast, but i just hate loud and i know i will be picky about it. before i drop a g on an exhuast, gonna put that money towards FI. what ever power i loose from the stock exhuast will be worth it fgor the relatively quiet sound.

good luck with your decision!

how is losing weight effect your torque??? i understand a boosted s2k needing weight for traction this is a basic i/h/e setup your gaining 10 hp... and um let me ask when you get rid of stock intake headers and exhaust how much weight are you losing 20 lbs max ??? i would do intake header and exhaust i really dont understand what you guys are talking about it makes no sense
