Would it really improve over a straight through, 3" single with only one bend?
Yes, because generally speak the quicker you can "expel" exhaust gases the more power you can make.

Also, would the reduction in back pressure cause you to boost spike?
No. Everyone that I know of that has this mod has not experienced any boost spiking, nor have they experienced an ill effects to their overall tune (i.e., running too rich/lean).

^This cutout allows you to run open downpipe/header when you want, and through your exhaust when you want. If you were open downpipe all the time you would be way too loud and get exhaust tickets.
Ah ok I got it, but where does the power come from? Im pretty sure if you ran open header/downpipe you would just lose power. Is it used to sort of seperate and only run about 50% through the exhaust and 50% open, am I making sense...

Wrong. Running an open header/downpipe will GAIN you power. The problem you are faced with is the LAW. This mod allows you to run in STEALTH mod, and unleash the power when the time is right. LOL!

I might think about this

Do you think that it could cause a restriction when closed?

Not at all. You will NOT notice any difference when closed. I am not joking here--this mod is the BOMB!
