How important is a tune...

I'm happy for this information but the prospect of running lean made my heart sink. I have a intake/header and was planning on installing my 70mm Greddy single & TP tomorrow. I've been holding off engine management until I ordered a SC. Suffice to say that I'm concerned now.
I have read that 00-01 models run rich in comparison to the 02-03 models, thus the reason for swapping to the later-model ap1 ecu. Should I be worried about running lean as well or is this mainly an issue for DBW guys?
Thanks & /threadjack.

I wouldn't risk it. Just wait until you get a SC to put the test pipe in.

I think people dont give the EMU the credit that it deserves, honnestly for the price and retaining OBD2 i think its a great tunning unit.

you could install the parts but i wouldn't go out and romp and stomp your car through the streets until tuned. just my personal advice.
like i said, if you install all those parts and drive to the store, it's not going to make your engine explode. but it's not the best idea for longevity and reliability.

i agree. All 3 of my previous cars (turbo and NA) that have had to be tuned have been set in the range of 12.8-13.2 and have made decent power. I think this is the range for making power and reliability still being there.
Knowing that the S doesnt have a air flow mon. I went ahead and got a VAFC for a tune.

I haven't heard any information on this particular item in a while, but perhaps you could look in to a Ballistic Motor Sports Ultimate E-Manage.
It's actually perfect for any combination of bolt ons. It's likely a better tune with its multiple settings than a custom tune you would get from most of the tuners who do not know how to tune the unit.

if you put all that in w/out tuning you will be running lean. probably around 14.5 or so given you're an ap1 and there is some richness to play with.

Honestly the best way to go about it is to dyno your car after and check your AF ratio. I have a FIPK, 70r Sparrow, and test pipe; but my car is running very lean. So In my case I'm most likely getting an ecu and a tune.
