It is possible to go several years w/o significant dings. I drove my new lip across country and back with zero damage. I did manage to put a ding on the hood right at the "H" but nothing on the lip and it is still pristine as far as I know. Learn to park well behind parking lot markers and your lip will probably stay "as new" for a very long time.
