Cool idea, but I hate the design. Imho it is just going to look cheap and tacky, and would take any ap1 tails over that anyday. This is just my opinon though, nothing personal. Good job for trying something like this on your own, i've done a lot of work with LED's and it can be a pain.

I would highly recommend you look into a constant current power supply. Deal extreme has them for around $10. That many resistors will generate quite a bit of heat. How do you plan to wire all of them? Are you going serial/parallell mix?

Kinda have to agree, I would definately red out the tail light lense to try and hide the dot matrix effect all the little LED's are going to have..

well the red LEDs have only a 15degree light angle so it souldnt red out the tail light too much. btw my old ap1 tail light housings were basicly desroyed and i was not going to trash them. all the lenses inside of the housing were broken and faded so i wanted to try something a lil different. im gonna hide the leds by smoking the lens, my current tail lights on my car are so blacked out u can barely see them at night.

and what will i be looking for at deal extreme?

Look at how they cover the dash LEDs, i.e. opaque sheet.... Keep up the work going for the audi look?

Nice, I've converted my taillights to all LEDs also, but i didnt actually redesign the whole thing like that.

Its really time consuming, but really worth the time.
Here's a photo of mine, looks better in person

Just one question, why didnt you go with piranha type LEDs?
