Default Questions about 4.77 install

So im planning on buying gears as my winter project continues. I have a few questions conserning the 4.77 gears.

So i plan on buying the kia 4.77 gear. Part number MM05727110. This might be a dumb question but which crush sleeve do i buy? S2000? Kia? Or does it even matter?

While we are on the subject about crush sleeves, theres a company that makes upgraded crush sleeves for the s2000. Is that a good investment to help the diff from blowing or no? Heres the link to the upgraded crush sleeves--->http://www.weirperformance.com/solid...pacerkits.html

So are there anything else i need, parts wise, for this install other then the gears and crush sleeve? I want to buy the parts and give it to a diff shop to install it for me. Thanks!

I am no diff expert but the OEM crush sleeve is weak. When Puddymod does a build(the man for diff rebuilds) he always uses his own desgin. See his threads, contact him, he is great to work with.

From his thread:

Solid custom sleeved pinion (no crush collar) we use 10/20 mandrel steel (seamless)

The PuddyMod solid steel sleeve is made of 10/20 mandrel steel it is seamless and will not distort or compress. It is turned and machined by hand in several lathes until the proper size and fit is achieved. Each sleeve is made one at a time and is unique to its housing and gear set. We do not shim the sleeve, we custom fit it to your rear.

Solid steel sleeves have been around for a long time. They have been used in high performance differentials for many years by top race teams that are serious about finishing and winning.

In high horse power and hard track driven cars these sleeves are a must have, or you may find your self sitting on the side lines with a blown diff, watching the competition pass you by.

Gear ratios that are available are, 3.63, 3.91, 4.10, 4.3, 4.44, 4.77, and 4.88 gear sets. (Richmond 4.56/57 if I have them)

If your boosted or ever plan to be boosted you should not be putting in 4.77 gears IMO. I am S/C and put in 3.9s.

Really good info DaGou!

After installing a set of 4.77's myself (twice) in my 2002 S2000, which suddenly made me less competitive in autocross and track events, I strongly suggest rethinking thinking HARD about whether you really want 4.77s. The S2000 is already geared very low, especially the AP2's, so the reduction in MPH per gear really hurts performance in everything except drag racing from a dig.

If you are really into drag racing, and don't care about overall performance, then 4.77's would be fine. However, you should then really think hard about the install. It is a very complicated install, and the slightest error will result in destruction. If I was going to do a gear swap (really interested in 3.91's...), I would go through Puddy.

Im pretty dead set on 4.77 already and not boosted and dont plan to be anytime soon. As of now just trying to see what other parts are needed. I plan to have a local shop thats done a few s2k rears do my diff. I know puddymod is our main guy for diffs and i know his work is great but im just trying to stay local.

So i should be set with just gears and crush sleeve?

If u can't get puddy for the rebuild. Buy the j's racing solid collar, and their expensive shim kit.. Unfortunately u gotta buy the entire shim kit and find one that fits your diff housing...
