Spark plugs
the OEM plugs were designed with the intention of being used for 100,000+ miles. I can tell you that mine were worn badly at 50,000 miles and probably well before that (I only got my car recently, which is an MY02). The platinum firing tip wore heavily causing the gaps to be pretty wide. Given that, I believe that we are probably best going with an aftermarket version, and replace them once every two years max. I like the Iridium NGK design, they take less voltage to fire based on their design, they have a tapered ground electrode, and the Iridium tip will wear less than a platinum tip, maintaining a consistent gap over the life of the plug.
All of my new Fords have come with stock Iridium plugs from the factory, and Ford wouldn't spend an extra nickel on a part if it wasn't worthwhile for them, so there must be something they like about them.
