Default Start button -- bypass when engine running

You know how many modern cars have a START/STOP button?

Now imagine switching from that to the AP1, and you will see that it's easy to make a mistake and push the red "Start" button in the S2000 to stop the engine. This results in bad noises as the starter motor gear tries to engage, and causes damage to it.

So this happened to my car, and the starter motor is now unappy. I will replace the part, but it seems kinda silly to have to buy a starter motor every time someone presses the red button by mistake.

I see two ways of dealing with this:

1) Bypass the START button when the engine is running.
2) Modify the START button to become a START/STOP button, depending on whether the engine is running or not.

Has anyone on the forums here heard of either one of these conversions?

Called a Honda dealer, and they said, go look on the web.

I Googled, but most search results deal with either fitting the S2k button on other cars (?) or adding a kill switch, neither of which solves my problem.

Any pointers appreciated.

You would have to put an interlock inline with the starter button or the starter. If the interlock is energized when the engine is running the starter would be disabled. I'm not sure who could design this for you. Maybe Modifry? Modifry

Sorry to hear about the starter.....hope the flywheel is ok.

I could understand the bypass, but if you're accidently pressing the Start button, I probably wouldn't want it accidently shutting the vehicle off...

The easiest option would probably be to make a little flip cover to just keep the start button protected from accidental hits.

my ap2 doesnt kick the starter on when i push the starter button it doesnt engage the starter when the car is running. but i do have a remote start alarm installed. not sure if that changed anything.

however, if you push the clutch down and push teh button, then the starter will engage even if teh car is running. is this what you did?

You could install a secret momentary (of type normally: open) switch inline on a power wire coming from the start button. That way, you'd have to hold your secret button while starting the car, and any n00bs that got in wouldn't know to use the secret button...

That, or maybe he has the mod that allows you to start the car without depressing the clutch..

Unless the clutch safety is bypassed, the starter button doesn't work without the clutch down. Why are you turning off the car with the clutch in, or while coasting?
