I think the OP thought it was a Start/Stop button, so I presume he wasn't moving and simply trying to turn the car off. Innocent mistake I think. I know on BMWs with Start/Stop, you have to hold the brake while turning the car off. He probably figured you needed to hold the clutch as well, hence the starter engaging even though the car is already on.

My point is, how is he grinding the starter at a stand-still? You would have to stop, clutch-in, and then hit the button. Why would you do that?

The only way I could think of that is he stopped, clutched in, and held that button down til it destroyed his starter/flywheel. I've accidentally hit mine, but I bypassed the clutch interlock, and I didnt need any replacement parts after that...

My interlock is bypassed as well, and I have never ground it. Must be defective.

I would guess it was not him that did that. My alignment guy did the same thing, but no damage was done.

Unless the clutch safety is bypassed, the starter button doesn't work without the clutch down. Why are you turning off the car with the clutch in, or while coasting?
Dustin, do you not turn the car off with the clutch depressed? I always shut my engine down with the clutch depressed and the car in 1st. Do you shut it down in neutral and then shift to 1st after the engine is off or do you leave it parked out of gear?
