Experienced Advice Needed on a New NA Engine Setup

Default Experienced Advice Needed on a New NA Engine Setup

Looking for some advice from members who have experience running or have built the setups below:

If you have a tried or have a current engine recipe you could provide down to the last bolt that would help. There are countless threads that talk about it but I have not read any thread that says they are running that setup, etc (I may have missed it). I own a 2002 AP1 w/ 80k and recently I spun a rod bearing which caused damage to the crankshaft and 1 rod . I am looking at doing a new setup for my car.

Goals:
My goal is to gain a little bit of horsepower with my new setup without having to use a stand alone since I have to do a replacement anyway. I have just enough money to install a shortblock (parts and labor) with a small little extra to spend (maybe around +/- $500). Total I can spend ~+/-$3500 (parts and labor).

Considerations:
*I may consider a used eManage plug and play (found one for $250 w/ boomslang harness). Also, If I can retain 9000 rpm "relatively" safely, that would be great! The 9000 RPM engine was the selling point of this car for me. I understand "piston speed" with an increased stroke is the main factor for the 1000 RPM loss.

Here are the combo's am considering:

1. A brand new (or used) f22c shortblock to simply bolt up on my stock AP1 Head with a thinner head gasket (considering the spoon gasket). I will use my AP1 ecu if I can.

2. Simply a brand new (or used) f20c shortblock with thinner headgasket.

a. On setups 1 and two 2, I am also considering to have the head milled if it can be done relatively cheap (head off the car). How much should head milling cost? I am located in Southern California.

b. Will I need any additional parts to run mainly setup 1 (and/or setup 2) such as eManage, stand alone, larger fuel injectors? We use 91 octane here in California.

3. F22c Crankshaft and F22c Rods to bolt up to my current AP1 pistons/block for a higher compression motor (11.8:1 - correct me if I am wrong). <---Is this true? Need more info on this on exactly what you need to do this setup and if you can run it to 9000 RPM. Also is this safe for 91 octane? Can I run a stock AP1 ECU. Should I combine with eManage?

From what I read from other forums etc that as long as you are below 12:1 you should be good with a tune and timing retard. Please advise s2000 experts.

4. I would also consider to do the K24 build that was recently done if I can get exactly what kevos2k got for $3600, however I do not know how much more it would cost to install, tune, etc. I am sure it is much, much more and you probably need a hookup of some sort. If you can hook me up with this setup for ~ $3500 tuned/installed , hook me up!

With that said, how do you like the setups considered above in your car? What did it cost for you? Has it been reliable? Are you using 91 octane?

Finally, can you give me the exact specs/parts/grind/timing, etc. to do these setups right down to the last bolt?

Im running the same setup your thinking about.Ap2 crank and rods with ap1 pistons .you have to have work done to the block for the clearance of the 2.2 crank and it all works i love it .Way more tq and yes i have rev it to 9k .But i have a built head with bc stage 2

You should buy a f22c longblock and install that IMO. You might have a little cash left after install.

I spun a rod bearing recently in my00 Ap1. I replaced it with an ap2 motor with a freshly rebuilt head. It was just a bare block/head so I used all accessories from the ap1 including the vc. I used my original ap1 ecu and put down 202/143 with a stock exhaust and intake on a dynojet. Previous motor put down 198/13x with a single exhaust and an aem CAI on the same dyno. Car drives awesome and was fairly inexpensive all things considered.

you dont have to modify anything to fit an ap2 crank in an ap1 block.. the blocks are nearly identical.

I had planned on doing the same thing but my stock ap1 pistons were a little to beat up to reuse.
