Check the post linked above.

Also if you're set on the VAFC, get rid of the VAFC and pick up a NEO as it gives better control over vtec. The VAFC 1 will only allow vtec by RPM. The NEO will allow VTEC to be RPM and Throttle Position dependent.

Edit:

The tune will be as safe as you or your tuner makes it. You will need access to a wideband afr gauge.

Yep stick to the NEO, better vtec control, like stock. With the vafc 1&2 vtec will come on at a set rpm point, no matter what amount of throttle your giving it, which means you will be cruising in vtec at say 10% throttle on the freeway IF you want the rpm point set low enough to boost your mid range power. This means results in running overly rich and poor economy and throttle roll on engine response suffers. They are severely compromised in that regard. NEO is controlled by rpm AND throttle % like stock ECU. Mine is set to come on at 3600rpm and 30% throttle. This works the best overall for my modifications/ bolt ons. This just wouldn't be realistic with a pre NEO gen vafc.

you can lower VTEC for AP1s its really the only thing that it does successfully... It gave me a nasty hiccup and i ended up taking it out.

You will need to tune the fuel with a wideband or a dyno shop with a wideband. That is the only way to do it safely.

Gains depend on each individual vehicle and mods. But I love having a smooth vtec transition over the harsh oem set point. On my 02 I had it set at 5500 rpms and the transition is very smooth, so much better if you get vtec initiating in corners or long curves, and also better in wet conditions.
