2011 S2K Challenge Series Discussion Thread
Hello everybody!
Based on consensus opinion of the 24 pages of feedback from the prior 2011 S2KC Discussion thread, I'm posting a revised set of rules. Thanks to all those who have participated in these discussions and provided valuable input.
Feel free to discuss the new template on this thread. Please provide validation or constructive criticism, and please keep your tone respectful of other people's opinions.
This will be the template I will print out and bring to the season finale after-party/dinner at the Golden Cantina on December 4, 2010. We will have a final in-person group discussion to finalize any last minute changes before we lock down the rules for next year.

S2000 CHALLENGE CLASSES
Stock Class - 0.5 points maximum
The purpose of this class is to keep costs down and be attractive to a newcomer with a completely stock S2000. Drivers of all experience levels are welcome. Tires are restricted to TW 140+ and no larger than 235/40/17 front and no larger than 255/40/17 rear.
Certain modifications are not allowed in Stock class:
- No Level 2 Front Aero
- No Level 1+ Rear Aero
- No Level 1+ Rear Wing
- No light-weight aftermarket parts or interior removal (unless necessary for safety equipment)
Street Class - 4 points maximum
The purpose of this class is to allow moderate modifications to a primarily street-driven car, as well as allowing CR owners the ability to truly "arrive and drive." Street class also encompasses our first Spec class. Drivers who conform to Spec-S Class rules will be eligible for both Street and Spec-S class points and awards. Minimum weight for Street class is 2800 pounds with driver.
Certain modifications are not allowed in Street class:
- No Level 2 Front Aero
- No Level 3 Rear Wing
- No Forced Induction
Modified – 10 points maximum
Minimum weight for Modified class is 2750 pounds with driver.
Unlimited – Exhibition Class – No points or weight limits
Spec-S Class – 4 points
The purpose of Spec-S class is to increase competition by narrowing the modifications allowed as to isolate driver skill as the only variable that will separate the pack. It is designed to be a cost-effective Spec series, with the ultimate goal of preparing drivers for a wheel-to-wheel racing series to launch in the future. Spec-S Class will be hosted within Street Class, and as such, drivers who conform to Spec-S class rules will be eligible for both Street and Spec-S class points and awards. To be eligible for Spec-S class, you may use your points only on the following modifications, listed below. Note that all points-free modifications are still allowed for participants in this class. Minimum weight for Spec-S class is 2800 pounds with driver.
Aerodynamics
1.00 = APR GTC-200 Wing
0.25 = Hard-top -OR- APR 2.5” Riser
Wheel and Tire
0.50 = 17x9” Wheel, F&R
0.75 = 255/40R17 Spec Street Tire F&R (to be announced later)
Power and Engine
0.25 = Any aftermarket cat-back exhaust
0.25 = OEM 2.2L AP2 Motor -OR- Test-pipe / High-flow catalytic converter
Suspension
1.00 = Spec lowering spring (to be announced later) with OEM non-CR shocks
If you own a CR and want to run in the Spec-S Series…
Follow all the same rules, except as follows. You must run the OEM CR suspension and OEM CR aerodynamics package. You may run your OEM hard-top or opt for any aftermarket hardtop. In addition, CR owners may use their last 0.25 point for a rear diffuser, power improvement (intake, header, high-flow cat or test-pipe), or an extra 25 pounds weight reduction. All points-free modifications are still allowed.
WEIGHING
Rules
Each class has a minimum weight: at any point during the day, a competitor with driver inside must meet that minimum weight. If and when a competitor is found to be below minimum weight, 0.25 points will be added to his setup for every 25 pounds under minimum weight. If the additional points cause the competitor to be over points for his class, he will be penalized 1 second for every 0.25 point he is over.
If this is the competitor’s first weigh-in, the first 25 pounds will be allowed as leeway (for possible scale-to-scale variation), but he will be penalized for any further discrepancy. Also, if this is the first violation, he may choose to forfeit all laptimes he has accrued until the weighing process, add back weight to his car to meet minimum weight, and re-start new timed laps instead of taking a lap-time penalty. Any repeat violations will automatically incur the lap time plenty as outlined above.
Example of the weighing rule: if a Street class competitor “A” has a setup with 3.75 points and is found to weigh 2780 pounds with driver, 0.25 points will be added to his setup--since his setup is now 4.0 points and still within Street class limits, no time penalty will be assessed. However, if a Street class competitor “B” has a setup with 4.00 points and is found to weigh 2760 pounds with driver, 0.50 points will be added to his setup. Since his setup is now 4.5 points and is over the Street class limit, a 2-second penalty will be assessed to every lap of the day. If this were his first weigh-in, he would only be penalized 0.25 points (since the first 25 points are allowed as leeway). He then has the option of: 1) adding 1 second to his lap times, or; 2) forfeiting all previous lap times, adding back the weight to make minimum weight, and restarting new timed laps with the remainder of his sessions.
Weighing Protocol
One competitor from each group (Street / Spec-S / Modified) will be selected at random to be weighed at any time during the day. The probability of being weighed is directly proportional to the number of points he has accrued throughout the season (for example, this is equivalent to adding one’s name in a hat once for every point he scores, then drawing from that hat at random). That means top drivers have the highest likelihood of being weighed, and drivers who have yet to score points will never be weighed.
Weighing Logistics
Two drivers from each class may volunteer or will be randomly selected to participate in the weighing process. Only drivers from a different class may weigh one class (to create impartiality). For example, if a Stock class participant is being weighed, only the two drivers from Street and two drivers from Modified may assist in the weighing process. All who participate in the S2KC implicitly agree to help with the weighing process if called upon, barring any extenuating circumstances.
PROTEST PROTOCOL
A competitor may also be spot-weighed if three peers (or at least half of the participants of that day, whichever is less) from the same class believe the competitor to be in violation of minimum weight. That competitor will be liable to be weighed on the spot. In addition, if a competitor suspects another is underrepresenting his points, he may bring his concern to a member of the S2KC Committee immediately, so that a committee member can audit the car at that point, and compare the setup to that declared on the signup sheet. If a participant fails the audit, he can choose to: 1) correct the violation and forfeit all a previous laps and redo timed laps for any remaining sessions; or 2) take a 1 second penalty for every 0.25 points he is over the limit.

Can we break this down more?? I would like to try cams..but its not worth the 1 point.
Maybe 1.00 for a fully built motor?? Head Work, High Comp, Rods and Cams.
What you have looks real solid Ed.

Just ran my points. I'm maxed out at 10. I currently weight 2700 lbs w/full tank. After subtracting 72 lbs for fuel I'm at 2628 lbs. I'll need to put 130 lbs of ballast back in the car to be safe. The removal of the safety points really hurt.
Ed, I got your current setup at 10.25 points. And I'm guessing a few other modified guys will be over 10.

Chris: keeping track of this and that for internal engine modifications is too much of a hassle. If you open up the engine and replace anything besides the valves and valvesprings, you will get a 1.0 point penalty. Whether you have cams, or a fully built motor, it's the same penalty. (Analogous to a supercharger that makes 260whp vs. a turbocharger that makes 390whp--same penalty.) AC and audio removal is now a free modification, so long as you still meet minimum weight.
Jim: Ed agreed that vortex generators should be a free mod. They require the installation of a hard-top, which already carries a penalty of 0.25 points under the aero category. Further, if we are going to give additional penalty for vortex generators, should we also penalize further the Spoon hard-tops? One could argue that Spoon hard-tops have a more gradual taper, thereby decreasing the amount of local flow separation. A vortex generator addresses exactly that same problem, which is obviously worse on the Mugen hard-tops.
Jim: does removing a windshield wiper make a big difference in aerodynamics?
The minimum weights for Street and Modified are still up in the air, and pending real-world weight data. I am not sure how Jim can weigh 2700 pounds with full tank and driver, whereas Ed and Mike T. weighs ~ 100 pounds more with quarter tank and driver. We need a consensus on reasonable minimum weights.
Ben: I'm hoping that the Spec spring is the Swift Spec-R, and the spec tire is either the Federal 595RS-R or Hankook RS-3. Your car is already perfect for Spec-S!
