That depends. Some people say to wait for marriage, but others say engagement is plenty good enough.

LOL!
I think you all know what I meant. Just don't be overloaded with too many inputs / actions before the corner. The G-forces alone can help you mis-shift. Like stated before, the shifter and gearbox of our S is precise.
I don't know if this will help, but I'll shoot it out anyway...
I have "shaped" my cupped shifting hand. For Gears 1 and 2, my cupped hand has a pinky bent in.
For 3 and 4, the hand is cupped neutral.
For 5 and 6, I bend in my thumb.
All shifts forward are done with wrist cupped and arm pushing forward. Shifts down are done with the the majority of work done by the wrist and the wrist retracting.
I haven't had a mis-shift since adopting this method.
Always cup the shfter with your palm above the knob. NEVER grab it by its side.
And DO NOT force a shift. Let the revs match and let the synchronizers do their job.
Make sense?

Great point. The more I think about it, that's exactly what's happening. I'm shifting while I'm in a slight curve, moving out of a straight line. Most of them have been going right, when I need to go from 3rd to 4th or 5th to 4th and it goes to 2nd...

I've gotten some good instruction, along with proper shifting technique. But this is something that still needs more work on.

I've been working on the backhanded shifting and it's starting to become more natural. I think this will help me on the track, I've already noticed that this method doesn't allow any close handed technique on the downshift.
