I've read the instructions regarding the need to bed in new porterfield pads. The instructions say to brake gradually from medium speed... what is medium speed? Are we talking 4-5 stops from 40 mph? Any suggestions are appreciated.

I probably overdid it, but it took quite a bit to get them to fade.. I probably made six or eight back to back hard stops from 60/70. After the last I had smoke pouring off all four wheels so I drove for a minute to cool them down and I have had great stopping since then.

When I bedded in ours, I took the car out on the freeway, put it in 4th gear, drove at about 70 with the brakes on light to medium.

Basically you're trying to release the gases. So hard stops aren't necessarily the right way to go. You want to get them nice and warm, but you don't want to slam the brakes on.

Ours work EXCELLENT! It's amazing how fast the stook can stop with R4 pads! It's also cool to have them squeal when you stop and leave tons of brake dust! Okay, so the last part isn't so cool, but man does the car stop!

To ressurect this thread, I have a question - is excessive noise normal? I put on new R4S pads tonight, and I've bedded them properly (as far as I can tell - several hard stops, got some moderate smoke.) And they make a ton of squeal when coming to a stop.

Mark,

Wow what an old thread......a lazier person would have simply started a new one

I was planning to take the R4S' out after the track day but I must admit I really like the extra grip. It's pretty funny, I drive with mine all day and get into a new S2000 to do a demonstration drive for a customer, and I always "misjudge" my braking by not applying more pedal pressure.

Back to your original question, other than lots of dust, and a bit of scoring on the rotors, my pads are quiet.

Mine are pretty quiet, too. A little squeal every onece in a while, and lots of dust.

If you're getting that much noise, you should check to make sure everything is OK.

I couldn't go back to the stock pads, either, after getting used to the R4-S.

It's definitely worse when warmed up. No, I didn't apply any lube - where did you get yours? I'm used to it being included when buying the stock pads.

Most auto parts stores sell some sort of synthetic hi-temp brake lube.. usually a small tube of moly-something for a few bucks. Any time I have the pads off and some time I will clean the old baked stuff off and put on new and it seems to keep the noise down.
