I did that. The muffler shop down the street from me did an ugly, but inexpensive job. I had the bung welded after the honeycomb on the converging part. No CEL issues.

i have the same issue..... ive been racing with stock cat all year with the exception of a few events with hfc.... my berk hfc i bought used and after a few months the honeycomb became loose... went back to stock cat because i dont want the smell or worry of running test pipe on the street

my car sounded sick with hfc / stock exhaust with mufflers cut off

The same thing happened to me. I bought a used HFC and after a few months and several track days, the honeycomb rotated sideways and lodged itself in the back of the cat, clogging the exhaust. I cut it open, dumped out the guts, welded it back together, and went out for the rest of my sessions.

My plan is to pick up another HFC to use for auto-x and a muffler to go in place of the HFC for track days.
You bring a welding machine to the track?

I started doing track days with a 944, so the first thing I did was bring the guys at the dyno/repair shop in the paddock a case of beer. Now I never seem to have a problem borrowing tools at the track.

My Berk metal core HFC holds up well and has gone through many track days.
Not like the ceramic core Magnaflow I had that became loose and pivoted in the chamber.
No worries with Berk.

I use Berk 63.5mm HFC on the street - sounds good, no smell, and much much cheaper than an OEM cat at a $150.

I use a Berk testpipe on the track - more power, and don't have to worry about killing it.

I've reserved my OEM cat that is rattling like a child's toy for smog tests - it passes with flying colors, no problems.

HFC is fine if tuned right, but will wear out like all cats from excessive high temps. Test pipe is the best.
