Blowing out a differential is certainly not a happy thing, and given that you were able to find another for only $300.00 is great.
Another option would be to take a look at perhaps upgrading to a stronger differential more suited to the stresses of autocross and hard core driving.
OS Giken makes just such a differential. It is quite a bit more expensive, but offers up a level of performance that I think more than justifies the expense.
Do we have anyone here running the OS Giken Differential in their car?

did your diff happen to sound like this before it blew? This was the last session I ran before the noise got louder, turns out my diff was almost done. I was lucky enough it didn't blow out on me during that session.
