Building a s2000 for SCCA ITR
I posted this in another section, but thought it might get more feedback here> Sorry for the double post. Please post any comments here.
A friend and I have recently purchased a 2001 S2000. We are planning on building a full out race car for SCCA ITR. this means it will not be street legal and trailered.
Before we waste all kinds of money on the "wrong" after market parts, can anybody that has built one key us in.
Ok first: Who makes a good suspension (external res. struts not allowed) set up thats not in the JRZ price range? This means, struts, ADJUSTABLE SWAYS, Camber plates.
Second, Engine> Please read this so we dont get all kinds of out of range remarks. THe rules for SCCA Improved Touring are quite simple and short. You CAN, raise the compression by .05 (we'll shave the head for that), you can over- bore 1mm (we will not do that). You can balance the egine (I think this could be a waste of time since the engine comes pretty good from the factory, maybe Im wrong) You can use any exhaust/header, any air fliter set up (snorkle etc). You can re-flash the ECU - we need help here. Besides the above there are NO other allowed mods. Oh you can also baffle the pan if needed - do these cars have any oiling issues??
So: Here are my engine questions: Header and exhaust shape, pipe size and brand of free flow muffler (for sound only) . We will weld and build are own actual pipe, using mandrel bends. who makes the right header?
Intake?? Use the stock box and vent fresh air, or one of the many aftermarket set ups??
ECU mods --- Im lost here. Things to remember, we raised the CR .05, so we'll run Sunoco 100.
So anyone that has actually tested and dynoed with similar application/set up, we'd love to hear from you.
One other thing, rear diff's are free, anyone had luck here??

Hondata requires changing a bunch of sensors, too. From the regulations, I couldn't tell if that was allowed. I don't think ITR allows full ECU swaps. I'd have to go back & look. I forget how their regulations differ from NASA Honda Challenge.
You can change the ECU as long as it is still in the factory computer box. I know it sounds wierd. So literally you could gut the contents of the ecu unit stuff in something else and it would be legal. Most people "burn" a new chip, so its a couple hours of dyno time. Thats been my experience with older 80's cars. But with after market products for the s2000, once you make all your mods (CR increase, free flow exhast etc) what would be the easiest way to "tune" the engine for spark and fuel????
Suspension, try this
I've owned a set of Ohlins, but my experience with them is very limited. However, they are worth a look. Try this PDF.
The reservoirs integrated into the body, so it wouldn't be an external reservoir. They come with 500lb springs all around. I'm assuming you want to run r-comps, so you'll need a stiffer setup. To run, say a 1k lb setup, Tony @TCD told me that it would require a re-valve.

Baffled pan: a lot of people were running the TCD pan, but I believe there were issues with it (see sticky at top of main R&C page). I've read that there is a chance for oil starvation at high G turns. The J's racing or Mugen pans are good choices
Hytech makes the best header, IMO. They are one-off and the wait times are uncertain. The J's racing header is the a very popular choice in terms of quality, weight savings, and actually making power. I have one for sale, if you want it, PM me. For the exhaust, a 70mm pipe is optimal.
As far as the differential, the housing is a weak point. However, most or destroyed via clutch drops. Options are a Comptech Reinforced housing or a PuddyModracing housing. Both have good reps.
Another inexpensive option is to cryo treat the gears if you plan or running with the stock gears. I don't know if this is absolutely necessary.
