A driver was killed and another suffered major injuries Sundayin a crash at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, Riverside County Fire Department/Cal Fire reported.

The crash involved one car and happened at around 10:25 a.m. when the car crashed into a barrier, trapping at least one person at the private racetrack at 25-300 Rice Road, the California Highway Patrol reported on its website.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene while another was taken to an area hospital by REACH medical helicopter, Riverside County/CalFire spokeswoman Melody Hendrickson said.

Neither victim has been identified as of 3 p.m. Sunday and further details of the accident are unknown.

The raceway, about 55 miles east of Indio on Interstate 10, hosted its “2013 STAR Sports Car,” event on Saturday and Sunday, according to the Chuckwalla Valley Raceway website. It was billed as a Raceline on the website’s calendar, but doesn’t indicate how many cars participated.
Edit: other reports are suggesting it was an integra and the passenger died.
Conflicting stories about the passenger not having a helmet strapped, only a four point harness, etc...

Prayers to the driver, passenger, and their family whatever the details are.

We had an instructor seriously injured a few weeks ago on Summit Main. A good student in a new Boss 302 Mustang coming down the front straight at 100+ mph dodged something that flew off a preceding car. The Mustang put two tires in the dirt and then overcorrected to get back on track, spun, crossed the track and hit the inside tire wall, flipped over the wall and landed on a wooden fence. The student walked away but the instructor was seriously injurred. He almost died.

It can be dangerous but I love this sport.

Wow. Amazing how surrounding object cause the damage (thinking Dan Wheldon).
I too love the sport, but these are some great cautionary tales to think safety equipment first.

From one of the guys who know them personally.

"Guys... I know the parties involved personally. The story is incorrect. The driver is ok, the passenger did not make it. No one knows what exactly happened except for the driver but we all know safety is key. It's sad that a tragic event such as this has to happen to bring things into perspective. My thoughts and prayers go out to the driver and condolences to his passenger/family."

Fencing through sheetmetal or glass?

RIP to the other girl, I hope the details are shared so we can prevent it from happening again.
