For 99.9% of events I'm sure if you didn't bother doing that, things would be fine. This is just super strict rules-speak.

In the draft rules it says..
Any steering wheel may be used. An alternate steering wheel assembly, including all mounting hardware, which replaces an airbag-equipped wheel is not required to have an airbag but must weigh at least as much as the standard assembly. An alternate wheel is not required to have a horn button.

You can have an aftermarket wheel but it must weigh as much as your OEM wheel without the airbag.. The OEM steering wheel without the airbag weighs 6lbs. An aftermarket steering wheel with the hub, spacer and all the little bolts weighs around the same

I wouldnt say an aftermarket wheel and bolts weigh about the same. Andrewhake weighed his asm hub, momo wheel, bolts, horn button and wires and it weighed half of the stock ap2 wheel. I think they made the allowance because its impossible to get an aftermarket assembly to weigh the same.

With this steering wheel rule. If the aftermarket assembly weighs less. Can we add ballast to get the weight up where it needs to be?

I saw somewhere else a guy was making spacers to add weight but in my case id need 3 lbs bolted to the hub.
It will probably be one of those things that is just allowed and not enforced

Your aftermarket wheel + parts used to install must weigh as much as the stock wheel *and* airbag. To clarify what was posted above, so we aren't encouraging someone to show up with an illegal STR car.

Locally yes, nationally not really. The AP1 gives up too much acceleration (power + gearing) to the AP2 at about the same weight.

Based upon my experiences driving both, I'd estimate (on a typical course) the difference is worth ~0.7-0.8 seconds per 60 seconds on course.

FWIW, I have family/friends planning to run my AP1 at a couple of tours and nationals this year.

I guess I'm reading the steering wheel rule wrong then....

Any steering wheel may be used. An alternate steering wheel assembly, including all mounting hardware, which replaces an airbag-equipped wheel is not required to have an airbag but must weigh at least as much as the standard assembly. An alternate wheel is not required to have a horn button.

What I see is... any steering wheel may be used

what say you neurotic... we run at the same regions you gonna protest me?

nonetheless I guess Im putting the OEM wheel back on or at least bringing the OEM steering wheel with me incase someone says something
