I also would not weight them the same as the DFV. the DFV is a much more budget setup than the R2 or SRC, both of which are doubles with external reservoirs, while the HKS and DFV are singles.

ARE spec bilsteins are VERY good but the downside is they are not adjustable at all and by the time you end up converting the hardware over to 2.5" race springs, top hats etc + labor for re-valving the project is near 3K AND you need to throw away the majority of the bilstein kit.

Again, this is all bench racing. Find a shock tuner you want to work with, use what he wants to work on.

I'd agree with all of that except I think the Bilsteins would end up closer to $2000.

These are the two shocks being considered. Pictures from units being sold on this forum. To me, one looks and behaves like a shocks costing $1200 more, the other like shocks costing $1200 less. On top of that a used set of the Eibachs are for sale under $2000 on this forum. Even adding your own springs the price would barely break $2000.

We will need to agree to disagree then.

I own another car with ARE spec bilsteins (not PSS9 but built with used yellow B8 bodies) and the cost to assemble that coilover was NEAR 2k using spec miata coilover sleeves and no quality top hats, spring isolators etc.

Another S2K Challenge driver here after riding in my car opted for EXACTLY this setup (ARE spec PSS9) using used bilsteins and still topped your number. If you started with a new set of PSS9 then 3k is the number (his shock dynos are in my thread)

if you buy Ohlins, you should buy from one of them. Just call them up and tell them you're looking at the R2 and SRC and was told their custom valved Ohlins might be a better setup, tell them what you're gonna use the car for and see if what they tell you makes sense to you. I have absurdly long email and text threads with Heath from SBG before and after I bought my Ohlins asking all sorts of nerdy questions

To the OP. Since you are picking on of the two mentioned. Both work out of the box. I have the R2's and they are capable. :55 at BW on RE71R's. A fellow S2K challenge competitor has the SRC and they are capable too. He's done a :53 at BW on TD's. The SRC was the de facto coilover years ago.

What im getting at is both are capable so don't feel bad about choosing either. Are there better options, maybe but you want one or the other, so pick one and if you need a good baseline setting for the R2's PM me.

SRCs are much lighter too lol And dont need roll center adjusters like R2s will. Unless youre staying stock ride height. Both perform.
Ive had zero issues with my SRCs and continue to set fast times. My 1:53 at BW
