Gas Mileage at the Track
Did my first track day in the S2000 this weekend. I was surprised at what good gas mileage the car *seemed* to be getting at the track, much better than other similar cars I have driven at the track.
Well, I trailered the car home from the track and drove it to work today (first time I've driven it since the track day). About 2 miles into my morning commute the gas gauge went from 4 bars to none in about 10 seconds. Luckily there was a gas station nearby as I almost ran out of gas.
I did a search and it appears an inaccurate gas gauge is a known issue with these cars so it seems to make sense to pay closer attention to the mileage. It's never been a problem on the street for me though.
Since I didn't pay any attention to the mileage at the track this weekend (was relying on the gauge). What *ballpark* MPG are people seeing at the track? I think I'll be watching that instead of the gauge next time.
Thanks

Thanks for the info. I would have guessed in the 9-10 range depending on the track and the driver.
I have read about the fuel starvation issues. The track I was on really didn't have many/any long sweepers. I guess that's why I did okay in my last session even though I probably only had 1-2 gallons of gas in the tank when I pulled off the track for the last time.

I also got about 10 mpg at the track. My fuel gauge made a quick descent on one of the laps and while I was at nearly 8000 rpms in 5th, I must have run out of fuel and it felt like I hit a fuel cut. Could anyone explain what might have happened? Was there just not enough fuel to deliever the correct air/fuel ratio and the fuel pump temporarily shut off to save the engine? Or might it have done more damage to the engine than I had thought?
