I think Lemons and Chump have as much if not more to do with it. I knew teams that were going through piles of Star Specs in a weekend.
But cool that they are listening!

it doesn't seem like they have the production numbers to meet the demand. it's not like we're talking about a new tire here with erratic demand. the tire has been out for a while. they should be able to forecast better production numbers.
Anorexic poodle, have you guys tried heat cycling your tires before the lemons race? We used to just throw brand new tires on and go. Our tire usage was very similar. Last year we started heat cycling the tires before use and our tire budget has shrank tremendously. I'd say one set will last a race and still look decent afterwards.

I think the tire wear it is also dependent on the car and setup you are running them on. Can you share what car are you running and tire sizes?
Yeah, that's definitely going to be a big factor. We run a 1989 Honda Civic Si with 205/50/15s. It's been through lots of races, I'd say over a dozen at this point and is pretty well sorted. It weighs probably 1700-1800 with full stock fuel tank.
i am about to pull a trigger on 255/40/17 as well.
Other than RS3, i consider RE-11A, Dunlop Zii, what would you recommend? Strictly summer tires which see 2 lapping days each year.
And do RS3 runs wider than the RE-11A and Dunlop Zii?

@$upreme: Yes, they run wider than the RE-11A. They're slightly skinnier than the Dunlops.
Personally, I'm not overly impressed with the Rivals for the S2k. Emilio seems to love them on the Miatas, but I wasn't impressed with them on the BRZ (before the 2nd engine gave out... again, stock) on the few laps I did.
rhouck wasn't impressed on his S2k either.
Impressions and feedback (I'll update my tire thread soon...):
The Rivals make noise at 90% of the limit, whereas the RS3 makes noise at 98%. They're easier to drive by ear. However, once the noise is there, they don't get louder, which is in contrast to the RS3 and RE-11, both of which get louder as you get further past the limit. The Rivals also have what seems to be a TON of tread squirm. It's not very confidence inspiring. It seems to have LESS lateral grip than the RS3, but definitely brakes faster than the RS3.
My vote is to stick to the RS3, especially given the price difference.
This is how many were purchased for testing...

I love my RS3 for autocross and track days. Regarding the treadwear--the tire wasn't changed, they just bumped the rating so the tire would be legal in the new street tire categories in Solo that require 200tw. Treadwear is pretty abused as a marketing thing (they were 140 before because thats where they slotted in the market, and the lower the number the stickier the tire!)
From Tire Rack http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....l=Ventus+R-S3:
During 2012, Hankook Tire changed the Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG) Treadwear rating of their Ventus R-S3 Z222 Extreme Performance Summer tire.
UTQG ratings for Treadwear, Traction and Temperature are based on tests conducted by tire manufacturers and reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These regulations allow tire manufacturers to under-rate their tires’ capabilities, but prohibit over-rating them. UTQG ratings are required to be branded on tire sidewalls and printed on their labels.
When the Ventus R-S3 Z222 was introduced in spring of 2009, Hankook assigned the 140 Treadwear rating to match the UTQG Treadwear rating required by existing competition rules. However subsequent Hankook wear data revealed the tire line provided equivalent wear to its predecessor (Ventus R-S2) and earned the same 200 Treadwear rating. This has also been supported by Tire Rack survey results and customer feedback that indicate Ventus R-S3 Z222 tires provide equivalent wear to other tires already featuring similar UTQG Treadwear ratings.
With some competition rules now requiring higher UTQG Treadwear ratings, Hankook decided it was time to officially change the Ventus R-S3 Z222 line’s rating to accurately reflect its capabilities.
Since 140- and 200-Treadwear rated tires are available*, both currently appear on NHTSA’s safercar.gov website for the Ventus R-S3 Z222 line.
No changes were made to tire compound or construction, so all Ventus R-S3 Z222 tire sizes continue to use the same by-size Hankook S-Code (part number). Both 140- and 200-Treadwear-rated tires are compatible with each other when put into service as singles, pairs or in combination.
