I ran my first full day with DTC-60s last Friday at High Plains Raceway (open session 170 miles on track) and did not have the same experience as you. I had no trouble modulating and found the pedal pressure linear (at least I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary). I have ducting on all 4 corners so maybe this kept the temps lower? This was with BFG RIvals 225/255. Too early for me to assess how they are wearing but I was overall happy with them - good value for the price ($294 from Amazon).

Yeah I have front ducts but none in the rear...so that theory may hold water, but wouldn't I have seen it with the Carbotechs too in that case?

I thought XP20s were supposed to be much more aggressive of a pad in comparison to the DTC60?
I've only run my DTC60/HP+ setup once, but they were fine. I was able to get into ABS with enough pedal effort (I wasn't trying to do this). I will say that the DTC60 felt SIGNIFICANTLY different in my E46 BMW in comparison to the S2000. Significantly, to the point that I really wonder what was going on in the BMW in terms of what it did to initial pedal feel (a lot of up front travel and the feeling of being able to push through the pads, switching back to my street pads made the pedal feel normal, swiching back to the hawks returned the weird initial feeling). They are both consistent in braking performance though.
I like them in the S2000, but I will likely try different pads next just to get an idea of how other stuff works.

I've run Hawk DTC70/60 combo for 5 years in my SCCA STU roadrace car and never experienced the symptoms the OP described.
Tires are either Nitto NT01s or Hoosier A7s. Ducting at both ends.
They do eat rotors but I like them otherwise.

Hawks definitely have way more initial bite than Carbotechs...but I think the maximum braking efficiency is better on the XP20s.
