haha, I read about that, hit an Evo. sounds like it sucks. My car is in pretty good shape, should pass inspection no problems.

Visit local stores, or you can look online. Make sure the helmet is rated SA05 or newer.

A helmet is absolutely required on track.

There are local stores that sell race helmets?? I've never seen anything like that. Then again, I rarely go out shopping.

Obviously check with the organization beforehand, but some clubs allow the use of motorcycle helmets. I wouldn't buy a motorcylce helmet to start with, but I'd borrow a friends bike helmet for your first event before committing the $300 or so for a decent car helmet.

If/when you do buy a car helmet, again I recommend checking the local Florida section and see where people go. Around me there's only 1 store that I know of that carries helmets and I recommend it to everyone. Also, sometimes they sell helmets at the track (one of our NASA sponsors is a safety organization that sets up a table at every event).

SCCA site is junk. My impression is they forget that their are beginners that have no idea where to start. They are the best source for autocross though which I highly recommend you try out in addition to tracking.

If you want a track day in S. Fl look for hooked on driving, NASA, Chin Motorsports, or http://www.erme.us/ erme is cool because if you get a friend to sign up you can split the entry fee and both get full track time for half the price.

SCCA is really only good for autocross and full track racing not hpde's. They don't even do hpde that I am aware of.

All will require you to take an instructor with you and you will learn alot more that way.

www.saferacer.com is a good site for equipment.
Be careful about what you wish for, track can wind up eating 10s of thousands of dollars per year before you know it....

Welcome to the addiction!

I went with Chin Motorsports my first time out in 2005. Great for beginners and the instructors are great there. Safe racer is great for equipment. All you need is a helmet really for starters.

I recomend both PBOC http://www.pbocflorida.com/mainmenu.html,and Nasa http://www.drivenasafl.com/speed/con...event-schedule. I am a HPDE instructor with both clubs. PBOC has and event 4/16-17 down your way in Homestead. I am still putting my s2000 together so may not make the april event. Also for helmets try Wine Country motorsports, good people i like them alot. They have a store in West Palm beach and at Sebring race track. I'll be ready by May so if you sign up request Charlie for your instructor. I always request my students to ride along with me in my sessions.
