I don't think he mashed the brakes, I never saw brake lights. I would think it is simple case of Lift Throttle Over-steer. He was saving it, and he came off the gas too early and un-weighted the back of the car and lost all grip in the rear.

...and how about the "Safety Car"?
I don't do track events, but is it normal to stop other cars on the track and run safety crews in counter-race?

Doesn't seem safe to me.

See the guy waving the red flag? That's the signal for all cars on track to *safely* come to a stop due to an emergency. But that that safety vehicle seemed a little too anxious to get to the scene going CCW, unless they were paramedics and the guy was hurt.

Classic overcorrection. (We 911 guys are especially vulnerable to that.)

It's not a "race" .. it is a "drive your car on a track" day ..

They do 20min sets, and then another club/group will go out.

It was also on the first lap (preumably a full course yellow?). Rookie move, you should never be pushing it that hard on the warmup lap (you need a lap to warm up the tires, pads, and brain).

And he lifted.

Guys

Nice to know I am famous but for all the wrong reasons. T'was my NSX off at Japfest.

To be honest seeing the video of the incident, the flip roll and aftermath I am just glad to get out relatively unscathed, although as you say dented wallet and bruised ego are the worst. My missus came off worse than me in terms of shock factor. She was videoing !!!

I would like to confirm my "drift " comment to a marshal was just bravado. Anybody who has driven an NSX knows these can't be held very easily in a drift and I know I don't have the talent for such a piece of showmanship.

I can confirm I was caught out most likely be cold tyres although I felt a lot more grip in the other parts of the circuit

Lesson learned? Get trackday insurance
I have been doing trackdays for 7 years FWD 4wd and previously mid engined rear wheel drive in a tuned MR2 SC
