Having good electric brakes and a nice brake controller can really add to the safety of towing. Especially downhill when slick. You don't want that trailer pushing your rear axle to the side.

BTW, a friend gave the recommendation for a Tekonsha Prodigy RF (the radiofrequency transmitter) brake controller. It's awesome and leaps and bounds above what I had before. Portability between tow vehicles is another plus. Also no need to hardwire anything in your tow vehicle (especially if you're going to get a Land Rover).
Yep the trailer brakes on the u-hauls are pretty useless. Doesn't bother me since I tow with a 4wd diesel excursion, but in a short wheelbase SUV that could make it uncomfortable.

To those who trailer, what's your setup like? I'm going to buy a DD/tow rig and trailer before things start up for 2014 and would love to hear experiences. I've got my eye on a 32' enclosed gooseneck (24' box + 8' neck) and a F250/2500HD diesel...

I went with a 30' (24' + 6' v-nose) with conventional hitch + load distribution hitch. The entire v-nose is an extension of the floor, not a small compartment above the bed of the truck like a goose neck. Also the entire truck bed is usable. It's very roomy with the little S2000 with room for stuff behind the car and lots of room in front. My 2012 F250 diesel with built-in electric brake controller tows it like it's not there.

I have a 24' all alum enclosed. Lots of built in cabinets, 8ft fold down tire rack, fold down couch/bed with table, in floor winch system, elec system with 2 Honda generators. With the car, spares, tools, fuel, etc I'm at 7800 lbs loaded. I tow with a F150 supercrew with max tow package, and an Equalizer brand hitch (weight distribution and anti sway). I use the truck as a DD, so I wanted the better ride of the 1/2 ton. The truck pulls and handles the load very well, and I have no feeling of being pushed around by the trailer. I'm significantly below all the weight limits (total GVWR, axle limits, tongue weight limit, payload limits, etc). Main drawback is fuel mileage when towing with the ecoboost engine, I get around 10. Good news is fuel mileage for DD is good, at about 17.5, and around 19+ on highway trips.

For those interested, NASA Speednews magazine has an article on trailering in this month's issue. It would be helpful for those looking to get into trailering a race/track car and don't have any experience trailering. For those already doing it, there's not much to look at.

I have a chevy avalanche with an open 16ft trailer. It is perfect for the S. I keep all my tools in the dry bed with my rain tires and spare parts. The reason I got an open trailer is to use if for other things. I have used it several other times and just got it in Jan of this year. Driving home from the track in my truck is so much better than driving home in the S before. I generally go to VIR and it is about 3hrs away.
I have seen many people in a lot newer vehicles have mechanical problems and not be able to get home. At the last event a z06 blew its motor and the driver was stranded from Maryland. Just imagine the cost of one tow home from that far and your trailer will seem minimal.
