Here is a smaller Android based device and the price is right too:

I like the Ultra-gauge.
It will display 2 items which you can view easily, and 4 smaller items which can also be displayed. Display is basic, but readable, even in direct sunlight with the top down. Primarily I use mine to display my current IAT and Engine temp. Other values to monitor in real-time don't seem to be that useful (like O2 sensor voltages). It does support alerts as well. And it also pulls and resets codes. Cost was $78 shipped. They are also running a $9 rebate, but I can't really speak to it because I am still waiting on receiving mine. Really good bang for the buck.

Both phones are great. The iPhone interface is a little bit more integrated and easy to use. But just a little. While it does have more apps, the apps it does have are likely to be charged for, and also somewhat more expensive than Android.
The android platform apps are a little less expensive, and more free ones.
If you hold your phone in your left hand, you are more likely to run into the iPhones reception problem.
If you go with and Android phone and T-Mobile, you'll save a lot of money in the long run on your plan charges vs ATT or Verizon.
All in all, I'd go with the Android platform. And this is coming from a Mac fan.
