Reminder about safety when using a jack
Just a reminder to not trust the jack to hold the car up. We all hear and know this but sometimes we forget. At Infineon last Sunday I wanted to swap around rear wheels because of uneven wear, and decided to jack up the rear only using the jack under the diff. I was in a hurry and lazily didn't use my jack stands which I had (like most of us do every now and then). I got one wheel off when the jack failed and the rear fell to the ground (rotor hit ground, so luckily my foot wasn't there). Had to use a couple other jacks to get that corner back off the ground. So a reminder to be careful.
BTW, there is a good sale on on the Big Red (by Torin) aluminum racing jack with twin-pistons and a pair of fancy aluminum 3000 lb jack-stands all for $129 after rebate at Pep Boys. It's super smooth, more leverage, and a lot nicer than the Harbor Freight that I had. However, it does seem a bit heavier and larger (like the Sears jack).

Glad to hear you didn't get hurt!
Great reminder, and great advice.
No matter what kind of fancy, expensive hydraulic jack you have under your car, you are still entrusting your life to the $0.02 O-ring in it that keeps your car supported.

In addition to using jack stands--make sure that whatever the jackstands (or jacks) are resting on is solid. I was under an Audi on the side of the road when I discovered that 6" away from where I had placed the jack the road was hollow--I could literally push it in by pounding it with my fist.

Also, the Sears 3000lb aluminum low profile jack is on sale for $88 right now. Much better than my $24, POS, 392-pumps-to-lift, steel jack!
Glad to hear you didn't get hurt!

The Sears sale for the 4000lb jack is from $199 to $179. The $88 jack is a smaller jack, probably not different than all the other single-piston 3000 lb jacks, but don't know for sure..
