Default Smart Phone Data Acquisition

I have taken the cheap autocrosser approach to data acquisition and tried it out for the first time Sunday. It consists of the items below. Immediately below is a link to my first data collect/video all processed by my iPhone using Harry's Lap Timer Pro ($15). Thanks to Pete Loney for telling me about it.

April 17 Video - fastest TO run 64.317 sec

Re-used blue tooth MaxQData GPS (i-Blue 737 with 10Hz update rate $70 new $50 used) This required use of an app call BStack GPS to interface the GPS module to the iPhone via Bluetooth. The BStack GPS app also require the iPhone to be "JailBreak" enabled.

QXP Kiwi WiFi OBDII interface ($150)

iPhone4 utilizing built in accelerometer at 10 Hz, 720p video optional ($300)

Harry's Lap Timer Pro iPhone App ($15)

This setup should provide the following and more...

I am most interested in
Run times
Segment times
GPS Position/map
Speed
Lateral and longitudinal acceleration
Throttle position (%)
Engine RPM
Gear (calculated from RPM and speed)

720p video overlayed with map, throttle position, speed, g's,
easy transfer of files (pdf, kml, csv, etc) over network or internet to Dropbox or email
more...

The rest of this is images or screens/outputs.

So the Harrys app will sync The bluetooth and the obd2 wifi thing all at once? Can you post a pic of where you mount the phone?

Will this work for any bluetooth maxq nugget? The nuggets are just passively streaming data, right, so it should. (?)

It would be interested in seeing if the data could be acquired by 2 devices at once (my PDA with the maxq program, and my iPhone with Harry's Lap Timer). I'd like to compare working with the data on both devices.

Also, is there a way to easily work with the data on a computer after raceday? One thing I like about maxq is opening up the files on a full size screen, so that you can actually detect differences in line choice.

ok guys the video quality you all posted got me excited about this since I've been debating buying a gopro.

I could use this tomtom mount with the built in gps and proclips mount.

My only question about the tomtom gps booster is it a 10hz unit?

I could mount it here and have the ability of viewing between runs or rig it up to mount on my modifry camera mount.

What do you think?

I like the Dynolicious app better, but it looks good with the mount.

I've been using Harry's laptimer with the TomTom external GPS for the last few track days, works reasonably well and was within .1 seconds of a Racepak unit. The TomTom GPS is only a 1hz unit but is leaps and bounds better then the internal GPS, over the last few days I have notice it not picking up the 'finish' spot and ending up with an extra long lap that actually consisted of two. Since Harry introduced OBD2 support I've jailbroken my phone in anticipation of using an external 10hz GPS with the OBD2 wifi unit. I have yet to try the combo on a track so I can't comment how well it works yet, but I haven't been disappointed with the app itself.

Here is another item generated from Harry's Lap Timer app. More to come. BTW the time was accurate down to the tenth of a second based on setting GPS points at the start and finish lights.

KML file opened in google earth. The light green(?) in two of the corners indicates 1+ g's. There are segment names next to circle symbols that were set via GPS points during the course walk. Reminder: this was using a 10 Hz external GPS via BStack GPS app which requires the iPhone to be JailBroken.

I have it mounted along the upper edge of the windshield. See photo. This using a Panavise and a SnapMount Tripod Mount. I already had the Panavise for camera mounting.

I can provide a copy of the files if you want to see and try them out. Send me your email address via PM. I presume one of these can be used with RaceRender, but I have not tried yet.

File types...

CSV - with all GPS and OBDII data
KML - google earth file with plot as show above
PDF - with similar plot as above
CSV - for TrackVision or DashWare
HLPTRL - LapTimer
