Hmm, is that a suction cup. The reliability of that would not leave me comfortable. Also, i suspect problems with rollbar and top up being in the way.

To add to this conversation on smart phone data logging, a friend of mine is developing an Android data logger for solo and hillclimb use. It uses video and data overlays, and is designed to be quick and easy to use between runs (segments the course, etc). Target date for release is spring 2012. Hopefully there will be some road racing support down the line too.

Hey guys
I am looking to use my andriod based phone with Trackmaster to get some DA now that I have some adjustability in my setup. Wondering what kind of GPS remote receiver to use. I see 5 and 10 HZ sampling rates mentioned but not really much info on the specific products needed to make it all work. Do I need the OBD2 interface too? If I should switch to iphone next time is there a receiver that is compatible with both iphone and andriod based systems? I know I will need Harry's LT instead of Trackmaster but can one receiver cover both? Track day/Time trial usage mostly.
Thanks

I use a Panasonic Camcorder + sony microphone for video and sound, regular Bluetooth OBD2 reader, qstarz BT818xt for 10Hz GPS stuff, and the Torque App for Android on my Galaxy S2. I then import it all into Racerender for production.

The Modifry mount isn't stable enough to get sensible g-meter readings from the phone and the camera could be a bit more stable too

Here's my latest effort:

tried harry's laptimer for the first time last weekend at ACS ROVAL. it was OK for 1 session and from then on, it would stop or not record any data at all. i would get maybe 1 clean lap and my phone would just go to sleep. very odd behavior.

i should not that of the laps it did record, it was very close to the transponder. (hundredths)

I was at ACS on Sunday as well and I got video/data for the entire first session, but same issue for the remainder. This issue is typically the phone overheating (sometimes just the app crashing out, though usually you can tell the difference); seems to be around the 90+ degrees F mark that it will stop working at the track (I have had this problem all summer).

AFAIK you are SOL until fall/winter come back around and the temps drop (or go do NorCal tracks).

Re accuracy: I have the Emprum GPS unit and accuracy is within a few hundredths (if not thousandths).

I've had horrible luck with harry's laptimer, and really think I should just quit using it. I started using it multiple versions ago, before it had video functionality, but I have NEVER had an event where it recorded all of my runs / laps. I've had probably 2 events where it captured most of my laps, but I think my long term average for lost laps is about 90%. I also have issues with the Emprum GPS, since it loses connection when I drive over bumps.
