Default Targa Newfoundland

Anyone done this or know someone who has?

There is a "Grand Touring" class where you can take unmodified street cars without full roll cages. Wonder if a stock S2000 wouldn't be fairly reliable for this sort of thing.

Not a S2000, but a great website on the subject here: http://www.targamiata.com/

I bet a Stock S2k would be fun in GT... I read through the rules, the maximum allowed speed for GT cars is 80mph (130kph) so its not like your gonna kill the car (unless you hit something)

Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes are locals (Rochester, NY) who have competed multiple times and won in 2009 in their BWM 2002 (the multi-colored one at about 3:00 in the above video, with a clip of Adrienne navigating, Roy driving just after the car is shown airborne over the bridge). They've competed in in 1 Lap, etc. for years and are some of the better known non-professionals in these circles...

Edit - that's them in person at 9:45, too...

I always thought a beater miata would be the best Targa car as you could build it cheap, it would be fun to drive, and if you total it you won't cry blood...

Competing in Targa NFLD is a dream of mine. It is very expensive, especially considering you need a fully prepared car if you want to run the targa class. The fact that the touring class is limited to 130kph rules it out for me. 6 grand for registration alone, plus getting to and from Newfoundland and spending a week there racing... easily a $20k venture.

Seem like I saw a whole special on HD Theater channel? devoted to Targa Newfoundland. Company called Flyin' Miatas seems to be there often. Rules are set up to favor vintage racers rather than more modern vehicles but if it is just for fun who cares

I know several people who've done it in NorCal. Bill Arnold for example:

He runs an excellent BMW repair shop in San Rafael (NorCal).

I did it in 2006 as a co-driver and I had a blast! It's an awesome event and I'd love to go back again (in either seat). I'm not sure I'd do it in my S2000 ... you spend so much time in the car it's nice to have a bit more space.

We did it in a 944 S2 and it was very well suited to the event, although the car was in rough shape by the time we got to the finish line (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-hFx_xwB7g). The best car to do it in would be a nicely prepared 996tt in my opinion ... tough as nails and lots of power when you need it.
