Timeattack turbo build
devin,
I know im still a bit of a noob
but I went from my boosted civic last year to ending in the s2k
turbo I ran into issue after issue. mind you this was a civic with a built d16 running 110oct
first was only getting in a 10min before oil pressure was falling fast...
second I fixed that with a greddy oil cooler kit with thermostatic valve. now I was getting in about 15-17min(including warm up and cooldown. at that point the cooling system couldn't keep up. granted I was on a dual core half rad with water and water wetter. I had everything wrapped to help also. I should also mention I had a vented hood and my turbo sat in the front bumper getting max fresh air as well as keeping some heat out of the bay.
the heat was literally nuts
gonna sound a bit crazy but oversize your turbo!
a turbo as it nears its limits will produce heat much more rapidly. its better to run a gt35 at 15psi than a gt30 at 22psi. even though they both put down 350whp and the gt30 does it 1000rpms sooner. in this case the gt35 would be more desirable because its creating far less heat. heat is the biggest enemy hear
you will need lots of dei reflect a gold, lots of heat shields, ceramic coat everything, ducting out your ass, etc...
next unless your used to playing with higher hp cars you will need to get used to peddling the car. there were very few places I could go wide open throttle at gingerman...basically the straits. it will taking a lot of getting used to, a quick clutch kick or throttle blip can easily get the end to rotate....drifter style... I was in a fwd so it was causing lots of understeer issues, coming out of 10 I was literally doing a rolling burnout causing it to under steer. strangly faster understeering rolling burn out than dropping a gear, way to high in the power band and wouldn't hook and if I got out and back in it staying in third it would bog...
so in short you don't go WOT, brake, turn in and back to wot....lots of footwork in between.
what I will say is it was fun as hell having so much power...I drove my civic everywhere, including the track and home....typically trailered it though.
I should also say I have had my share of failures though. leaky oil cooler that needed welding, wastegate dump tube that was never recoverd from 7... my wastegate fell off once( that bolt backing out issue he was talking about) taking the oil drain line with it. inbetween sessions I was fixing or modding things instead of relaxing
I know its not a s2k but talk to adam jabaay.... he has been racing boosted and fighting heating issues for years with the dutch oven

That is why I am trying to stay away from those epic levels. Just keep the build moving and improving, but always ready to head to the track. I would love to see your car one day at a NASA FL event.

Yes I'm used to the throttle and brakes applications have you seen any of my videos Homie lol and you know jabaay is literally down the street from me and has shed a ton of light on this. I think we are ready to overcome set backs etc.
If you guys think this thread should be moved let me know, regardless I'll be using it to
Track my build
Progress and my tracking efforts boosted or not.
i'm in for this....i want boost so bad...lol
its hard dropping down to a low powered car...feels soooo damn slow. no better feeling than a turbo spooling and sucking you into the seat.
im likely going to toss a 75 shot at mine just to give it a little more for cruising. i know i cant use it at the track...nor do i need it while lapping. that should calm my nerves for a couple years

Well i have most of the build in my room right now. I sleep with parts it makes me feel kinda better. Its really cold outside so ive been neglecting going in the garage. I have an apointment with Suja 1 next month for tuning so thats how long i have to get the car running. should be fun PS i hate chicago winters.
I do a super lap series in the U.K in a boosted S.
I've never tried the time attack series here, but can't see much difference in the style of 'racing'.
Aside from practice sessions how long do you want to be out on track for? I'd imagine once you have your car dialed in for each track then it should be just a matter of three or four laps to get close to your best time?

SUja one has backed out due to have time constraints with their sponsored cars. They didnt think it would be fair to me because my set up needed a lot of one on one time. SO i've partnered up with love fab in MI to get the tuning done. With talking to cody more he wants to wire in all the fail safes, the AIM, and do a V mount on the car so thats what ill be doing.

just in case anyone doesnt know who love fab is he has built some impressive pikes peak NSX's and started with S2000s when they first came out.

You got it!!!!
Pretty much, the shortest is about 20 minutes, the longest is 30. Typically that is.

You should be fine with the heat. I haven't wrapped any of the exhaust or turbo and had no issues. I used the heat shield stuff below. If you want to protect wires etc this is the stuff I have used it on mine and the wires next to the turbo are fine.
