Tips and Suggestions: Supercharging or Turbo
Alright gentlemen, I am new here but not new to racing. I'm a big Supra guy so I'm all about turbo power. Though, I do understand that a great driver and suspension setup can make all the difference in the world. But I'm looking to hear from those of you that have gone the forced induction route.
Supercharger or Turbo?
What type of supercharger?
What type of turbo?
Cooling issues?
Are you doing v-mount?
How much power are you laying down?
How much pressure do you run (PSI)?
Stock internals?
Oil cooler?
What issue's have you had with your forced induction setup?
As awesome as the S2000 is with its suspension geometry and handling characteristics, I do feel its some what under powered. Please shed light on my questions and your experience's with racing forced induction. Is one really better than the other?
Respectfully,
Jonathan

Supercharger or Turbo? Supercharger
What type of supercharger? Vortech
What type of turbo?
Cooling issues? 110 degree track temps, water temps rose but just had to do cool down lap than hot lap etc.
Are you doing v-mount?no
How much power are you laying down?350 dynojet
How much pressure do you run (PSI)?8.5
Stock internals?Yes
Oil cooler? No, in the works
What issue's have you had with your forced induction setup? With the actual system none (knock on wood), sheared an axle, cooking front brakes, cooling when its hot out

I dont intend on running any class per say. I am new to "grip racing." I just want to get out there on the track and have fun. I have access to some very good tracks out here in Florida and I intend on going. I am new to racing and its etiquette but not new to motor building along with the fundamentals of a forced induction system. It's easy to make a car go fast but for what purpose?
I use to race some auto-x events and some stupid street racing. I intend on having the S2000 a daily driver, thats why I don't intend on making it a serious race car. Though, I do have concern over cooling and reliability. It would be nice have the car turn on everyday, go to the track on the weekends and then drive to school. The stock 2.2L motor seems to be very stout from factory and I keep leaning towards a Kraftwerks Supercharging system. It's proven, great reliability and from what I have heard they track stock S2K'S with the KW S/C for 30 min back to back hot laps without issue.
Hope that sheds light on what I'm going for here. I would love to join a SCCA event or something of that sort, but I don't know much about classes and such. Just trying to build the car to have some fun and take some abuse. I dare not say reliable, fast and cheap in the same sentence. lol.

If you don't have track experience then don't worry about forced induction initially. Get a rollbar, good tires, brake pads/fluid, and be prepared to learn.
Anyone can add gobs of horsepower to a car. But it takes an experienced driver to use the potential your car has. When you're nearing that point is when you add horsepower.

Think of running as an analogy: you need a bunch of guys to have a running race, but just because a bunch of guys are running together doesn't mean they're racing. Same thing with cars...

As much as I would like tips and pointers about racing and what its all about. Can everyone enlighten me with their wisdom and answer my question for my own good and the benefit of the forum. Cause the noob would have just asked, I actually searched and not one thread was found talking about these things. What am I to do? Ask these questions when I'm ready? I think plenty of people on here would like to know the same answers. Please.
I think most people that want FI for track events prefer superchargers for this because it's easier (read: cheaper) to keep temperatures under control. You'll be able to get 350-400whp out of a supercharger and do 20 minute runs. SOS could get you into the low 400whp range, KW will do great in the 350-400whp, the SOT positive displacement kit will probably do 300-400 but with lots more torque, there are a lot of good options... I haven't seen much in line of turbo used for the track. I sometimes hear the powerband of a centrifugal supercharger can make it easier to get the most out of the system on the track anyways.
Also, this subforum is heavily biased towards racing--less so towards HDPEs, track days, and occasional track ventures. I don't do it to that level, so I usually just lurk here now and then to learn a bit. I read one of the members with R-comps and Motons posted about how he was having trouble keeping up with another supercharged member--just tires, suspension, and skill made more difference than having 50% more power.
Honestly, the FI subforum may be a better overall fit for your question. Temperatures and occasional track days are commonly discussed there. This car is one that is generally purchased for the handling, and a large portion of the owners here do track days and/or autocross at least once in a while, so don't think this is the only place track events are discussed.
