Towing a S2K
I've decided to tow my S2000 to events this year. I need to purchase a car trailer and I'm looking for advice from those that regularly tow their cars. The tow vehicle is a 4.7L Grand Cherokee and I'm probably leaning towards an open trailer for cost/weight advantages.
I don't currently tow S2000, though I too am considering it. But I have towed other cars for over 20 years. Open and closed trailers.
I suggest you examine trailers and tie down methods (wheels versus frame is a continuing debate) and talk to the owners at your local events. Ask them about carrying tools, tires, etc. in tow vehicle vs. in box or rack on trailer. Nothing unusual about towing S2000 versus other similar sized cars, other than maybe low nose clearance.
I would advise tandem axle with brakes on at least one axle. Length refers to bed length. 14 foot open is enough if you carry nothing but car. Actually 12 foot would probably work if the nose overhangs the tongue. There is an RX 7 here towed on a 12 foot.
Jeep is pretty small/light for an enclosed trailer. I think you are on the right track going for light weight. Lightest is two ramps instead of solid bed, but this limits flexibility.
Will you ever want to use trailer for other hauling? If so get full bed (wood or steel) with 2x4 stake pockets so you can add stakes or plywood sides for furniture moving, trees from landscape nursury, lumber from home depot, trash to the dump, etc.
