Oil catch can? I've been running 4 years without one, never noticed decreased oil on the dipstick, never saw or was told about smoke. All on R compounds...

I've only had the oil/smoke problem once in 6 seasons of autocross on R-comps. It was a sweeping, slightly off camber, right hander that was more than 180 degrees.

I get a lot of oil blowby depending on the type of course.

S2000's that run on Rcomps frequently are prone to A-arm bracket failures. Any S2K owner who autocrosses should be aware to check for cracks.

That's definitely a common problem with AP1s. One sign of trouble is a reduction in the amount of negative camber available when you align the car. The bracket on the frame that the upper A-arm attaches to cracks and pulls away from the frame. It was addressed in the AP2 revision with sturdier welds.

I wanted to throw in an update on stock class setup. My 2008 non-CR has custom valved Konis and a Saner front bar on full stiff. This weekend we had a double header and I decided to test out the 275's at all four corners. I have been running the standard 245/275 setup since February when I began running the car. I have been constantly making it looser as I learned to drive the car so I decided I should try something to loosen it up a bit more. The first thing I will mention is the 275's DO rub on the front of my car. I lost two retaining clips over 8 runs on a fairly smooth asphalt surface.

On Saturday the car felt like absolute rubbish. I started out with the same setup I had run with the staggered tires. I changed the car after every run and it began to improve in feel. I was slower than usual and felt the car had a ton of time left in it and was much slower than I would have been on the staggered setup. I was very tempted to drive home and put my 245's back on the front wheels but I decided to fiddle with it more today.

I came into this morning with a very different setup (totally different tire pressures, and shock settings). I came back in after my first run and the car was a completely different animal from the previous day. It was very neutral and you could just hammer it everywhere. I have never had it so neutral before and I loved it. I didn't make a single change all day today and I ended up doing much better. The results don't show any change really but I was a ton closer to my competition on index and raw times. I am probably going to go to a local Nats test n tune next weekend to test out a the 245 at all four corners setup on concrete to see how it feels and I can start working on my setup for next year. I don't know if this setup is really any faster overall than the staggered setup but I felt a ton better on a transistion intensive course with 2 sweepers and 1 pivot cone.

I just wanted to share what I learned this weekend with my tire experiment.

This is a great thread! Glad to see the FAQ get some needed attention.

I'm not sure if you want this in the FAQ or not, but here is some info I got from Bill on his Front Sway Bars.

Hollow bar: 460-832
Solid bar: 531-954 (last 3 settings are 814, 884, 954)
Custom Hollow: 690-1240 (1240 is theoretical)

if anyone wants to try out the 275's up front - I have a pair with 50 runs on them I'd be more than happy to get rid of. I have some other AS AP2 stuff to ditch too - PM me for details

For the AP1 Guys, I can say that through my own testing (based on the advice of others,) I have verified that 245's all around, the 1.375" Custom Hollow Bar and Hoosier A6's is the fastest setup I've had on the car. I picked up ~2 seconds going from 275's in the back to a 245. (Reasons already discussed in other threads.) This also after trying the standard solid bar. I came to this setup with the valuable input of guys like Pfannenschmidt, Dave Roberts and Jeff Janzen above all.

August 1st marked the 1 year mark for me in the s2000, and for my autoX experience. With the seat time, and setup changes I went from .5 back on the Kozlaks, to .4, .3 , then with the new custom hollow bar, raw timing them in Finger Lakes and then beating them clean (like .5 seconds) about a month ago at Devens, MA (Disclaimer, they were on old tires, take that for what it's worth.). I'm STILL on stock shocks. I would say he custom hollow bar on full stiff is .5 faster on a 60 second course than the solid bar. I have not touched the alignment settings since I got it aligned LAST YEAR. This was 1.7' up front, 1.9' in the back and 1/16' toe out front 1/16' toe in rear. It's a pretty neutral setup, mild understeer sometimes steady state and moderate oversteer others depending on corner, surface and a bagillion other reasons. Overall I'm very pleased with it but will likely 0 the toe out in the front and call it a day. The AP1 is a monster if you can hustle it around the track- foster a HUGE discrepancy in time between an s2000 master and the rest.
