Yes, it has a purpose. No need to reinvent the wheel here though, APR has an in-depth description at the bottom of this page:

I just typed a whole long paragraph, then I realized I just don't give a shit. Too much time wasted trying to share some thoughts on the topic, I've learned my lesson to never do it again.
No need for any of that, all your input was technically sound, keep it coming

However, a lot of us here are looking for some real proof on these items, as they are both valuable in lap times and a significant investment, not to be taken lightly. My addition to the thread is that they should be able to get us the numbers we need on the cheap, no need for full sized wind tunnels or years worth of CFD.

What would be the optimal location for a 3D wing APR, Voltex or J's?

What is the current thinking on the size Gurney Flap to use?

and where do you buy this one the Max Rev pictured earlier?:

Thanks
Mark
Don't know for sure, but it seems as though the fastest guys are running 285mm mounts.

From the journals I have read, the general consensus is that the gurney should be between 2-4% of the chord before it starts to introduce additional drag. The key being, placing the gurney as high as possible, but within the boundary layer created by the aerofoil itself. Aim being to keep the turbulence created by it on the pressure side under the boundary layer.

I am still looking for info on the structure of the Voltex wings. I posted this in the Voltex thread in the gallery, but have yet get any response. From the available/marketed aerofoils, I tend to like the shape of the ASM GT05 Tsukuba GT Wing best (I'm not saying its the best, I know next to nothing when it comes to aero). It has very little variance in AoA which is actually a positive for a wing that can be placed @ or above roof line. It also has a solid aluminum strut as a core. ASM has tested the structure of the wing to well above projected lift. ASM also has a line of gurneys available for it, also in dry carbon.

digitalHorizon, nice seeing you here! I learn a great deal from you.. in regards to aero.

Voltex has developed / financed a wind tunnel with a local university...

Although this looks cool, does it work well though? I am not a specialized fluid mechanics engineer, but I have a degree in mechanical engineer and have done some fluid mechanics. I thought that for wind tunnel testing to be effective the wind tunnel space has to be much larger than the model tested in order to yield proper results. I think something to do with the interference of the air at the wind tunnel walls causing turbulance. And also that wind tunnel is exposed on the side to the ambient air, any issues that can arise with regards to that?

Anyone can shed light on this?
