Default when to replace brake pads/ and what to replace them with?

My car has around 22kmiles on it now and i have driven it hard a lot. Now that I have gotten into auto-x i was wondering if maybe i should get new pads. Is there any way to know when yours pads need replacement?

Yes - pad thickness. New pads have about 11mm of friction material; Honda recommends replacement at about 1.5 - 2 mm. On the S, the rear pads are easy to see with the wheels on; the fronts are a bit tougher, but are probably comparable.

As for which pads... There's a range of options; the best choice depends on your needs. Do a search for some thorough discussions.

For auto-x I recommend Porterfield R4-S. R4's require too much heat to work best and you won't find that in auto-x. If your brakes aren't smoking at the end of your run then you shouldn't use race pads. R4-S provide better stopping power than stock, are quiet and make a great street/auto-x pad.

I use the Porterfield R4-S pads and they're fantastic. They struggle a little on the track, but for autocross, they work beautifully. Far better than stock pads in my opinion. And if it makes you feel any better, my brother uses them as well on his S2000.

... and all (ALL!) of the drilled rotors that I've seen used at track events have cracks form at the hole . This includes the nice looking Spoon rotors that are said to have the holes cast in place rather than drilled after the rotor was made. [Note that I have not yet seen drilled ceramic rotors in use ]

I've been very happy with Porterfield R4S pads for light track and autocross duty - the only aftermarket pads I've tried so far.
