My S is dropped and tracks lighter and wider.
umm, that's a mighty big and uneducated doubt of yours. I sure don't take it seriously, unlike my expectations of the car.

Why wouldn't you compare your moderately modified S2000 to a moderately modified Z4 3.0? Likely chippable for more power and responsive to exhaust and intake tweaks. Get rid of the run-flats, put on camber plates, and then hmmm.

But it is a $45,000 car in 3.0 guise with even moderate options. The M will be over $50K. It should have a performance advantage over a $33,000 2.0 liter roadster.

Because if both were moderately modified I would not be sure that mine would beat it and I would not have posted anything.

Seems as though that father and son like track driving and dad has a Z06 and son wanted to have another in the family so they could both run. Mom was not thrilled with them buying her a vette just so they could use it occasionally so they got mom a silver Z4 with an automatic. Not to worry, father and son told mom they would break it in for her and showed at TWS with the car with only 1500 miles on it and paper plates.. but they did have time to add some OZ wheels shod with Hoosiers.

Son did a good job of driving the automatic leaving the stability computer turned on.. ran consistent 2:07's making a lot of us look weak as we struggled a little to stay with him at times. My best lap is 2:05 and I would be happy to be as consistent as he was. He is a good driver but I don't think he was quite as fast driving dad's Z06 in later sessions.

Looks like this car will be fast machine on the track. The M may be a monster.
going back to your original post, he was running hoosiers, not the ordinary DOT tire. Those tires alone bought him a lot of time. I wouldn't give the car too much credit, just a combo of everything but tires make a HUGE difference.

Sure those tires helped.. but this is a young man with no experience in this car.. only 1500 miles on it.. an automatic.. I for one will give the car credit. I expect a six speed version that is broken in and well driven will easily lap faster than an S2000, and the M (which IS coming) will be in a different league. Like the styling or not.

BMW is denying these rumors. Several from the board of directors have said there is no longer any plan to create an M version of the Z4.

Of course only time will tell, but they are actively saying No, not Yes.

And after about 12 years of driving schools, I must say, low lap times have more to do with the driver, than they do with the car.

I sat in a Z4 at the dealer the other day. It seems HUGE inside compared to our cars. I would think you'd be sliding all over those seats going around the track. I personally prefer the snug fit we have.

Can't say anything about driveability and performance, after seeing the fugly interior, I was less than impressed, and not motivated to act serious enough to get a test drive.
