Yeah, the 911 is a lot like the S2000 in that it doesn't have the torque of an American car, so the auto is an absolute performance killer. Can you imagine putting an auto on the S2000, I bet it would add 1 sec. to all performance catagories. For the 997 (new 911's coming out in a few years) are going SMG.
This story sounds about right. I have put a bit more on a stock S2000, but I have I/H/E. The 99-01 911's have 300hp, the new ones have 315-320 hp, and are a bit faster.

The speeds are approximate.
The 911 definitely feels like it's got torque. Tiptronic or six-speed. Many times over. The S2000 under 6K can't even compare. So they are nothing alike.
All I know is that the manual 2000 Carrera 2s are faster in a straight line than the S2000 and do it in a very quiet, understated manner. With that said, in a street race that isn't setup even like above and if the S2000 got the jump on the 911, it'll be a toss-up until you got up to some crazy speeds.

The 911 has 258 lb./ft. of torque, while that sounds like a lot, most of it is only accessible above 3000-3500 RPM. When I have my car in 5th or 6th on the freeway acceleration is not great until I get to 3500 rpm+. Similar to the S2000 in that it does not have the immediate acceleration of a V8. The new 911's went to 273 lb.ft. and feels a bit better.
