OK, I am not the street racer type (married, homeowner, business professional, totally clean driving record,low-30's etc...). I really enjoy my S and realize I am bound to get quite a few challenges on the road driving the car I do. 95% of the time I ignore that 18 yr old driving the Civic with coffee-can tailpipe revving up next to me. But today I couldn't help it.
I pull up to a red-light next to a 20-something Eminem wanne-be in a 2000-ish V6 Camaro ( could just tell by looking it wasn't an 8). His girlfriend is in car w/him. The 2 lanes we were in merged into one on-ramp about 100 yards ahead. The merge is not very straight. In the 30 seconds while I waited for green light, the kid gave none of the usual signs (revs, yells, false starts...etc) and I was looking down messing with CD player. Well, light turns green and I took off strong figuring he'd give me the right-of-way. The kid floors it and guns ahead 1/2 car so I was like "dammit I'm beating him to the merge"! I shifted like a pro and let the VTEC put me ahead of him at the merge. By then I was doing about 90 when I hit pretty empty freeway. In 5th I slide to far left lane and check for troopers and keep it at about 85 shifting to 6th. Well somehow the kid got pretty far back (well maybe I was going a bit over 90
). After about 5 miles I thought I'd ease off throttle and here comes the darn Camaro still racing! He just wouldn't let it go. He gets right on my a$$ and starts swerving around like a maniac. I sped up and watched him fade off into distance in mirror. He exited after another few miles.
Point of my story is: street racing is quite stupid. It was a rush but in future I'll just let the kid take the ramp. My opponent was probably enraged by losing (with gf in car to boot)and who knows what would've happened if he had followed me further. I read many SE posts and wonder how this does not happen at least 50% of the time
My cousin who I am closest to just lost his license for exessive speeding. He is very competetive like me but has little control. I'd hate to be be in his shoes.
Be safe out there.
