gears don't hurt "top end", they lower your top speed.
4.77 loses its effectiveness marginally the faster you go. Anything in the stock 4.10/4.30/.4.44 range is going to be the best compromise in exceleration out of the hole and at speed... and more so as your engine output goes up.

"loses effectiveness" ok, but it's still able to accelerate faster than a stock geared s2000 at any speed it can attain.
If gears are a "torque multiplier" why would it only apply to lower RPM ranges/lower gears?
