Default AP1 vs 335xi

I was sitting in the far left lane of a 2 lane left turn at a red light. A bmw 335xi sedan that had been tailing me for a while pulled up in the lane beside me.

I wasn't sure if he was up for a run, but as soon as the light turned green he took off rather briskly so I did the same. As soon as we both completed the 90 degree left turn and straightened out we both punched it at almost exactly the same time (I was in perfect range at around 6500rpm in first at the time).

First gear was pretty much dead even. As I shifted into second to my suprise I slowly began to inch away. As i shifted to third I began to pull away a little more, I shutdown shortly after redlining in third and shifting to 4th (was around 90mph I believe) and I had maybe 1 car length on him.

The guy was a good sport not your typical bmw driver, he looked to be about in his 50's and when he pulled up beside me he had a big smile and gave me a huge thumbs up.

I'm very impressed with the result as I know the 335xi is a 300hp twin turbo AWD platform, so I was expecting to lose. Anyways, just thought I would share my little encounter with you guys.

My s2000 is an 01, mods are as follows:
AEM cold air intake (V1)
Berk 63mm test pipe

hmm i guess the Xi's are a bit slower than the regular 335i from a roll.
the Rwd version is still advertised at 300bhp/300tq, but dynos at 280 whp!!!

Yeah i'm guessing from a dig with the 335xi's AWD launch the result would have been different.

And I also imagine the AWD adds a couple hundred extra pounds of weight over the regular 335i which would slow it down in a drag race, but nonetheless sure felt great to beat that thing!

All wheel drive wont matter if the BMW driver isn't willing or doesn't know how to launch, I'd be more fearful of the rear drive 335 (obviously you don't have to rev the 335 because it makes plenty of power down low). It's the same with the stock Evos, MS6 and WRX, they can be real quick to 60mph if the driver is willing to launch them hard but most of the ones I've run across are not willing to do so and that changes everything.

I have run a few 335s now, 3 autos and 2 manuals (one of the autos was a convertible). Driven correctly they are faster then an S2k but in all of my runs I beat the driver. Every time was the same thing, we end up side by side at a light and give each other the look. They don't launch hard but I do and they don't catch me until 90+ MPH. They drive off passed because they thought they were so powerful that they could launch soft and easily catch and blow by an S2k. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way on the street. They may be faster but they are not that much faster, maybe a full sec faster through the 1/4. They could easily give up that 1 sec advantage if they don't launch correctly.

The same is true when the roles are reversed. I raced a new GTI 2.0 Turbo and just rolled off while he reved and dumped, front wheels hopping and all and I didn't catch him until 60MPH. In his head he beat or at least did very well against an S2k (I bet he posted on his GTI site). I didn't feel defeated but it sure did make me realize how a performance advantage can so easily be gained or lost. I guess that is how the 335 drivers felt...

i wouldn't say the 335i is a Full second faster on the 1/4.
from what i know they run low low 13's stock, maybe even 13 flat.

From most of the tests I have seen you are correct, prolly only like .7 of a sec. faster. Stock for stock I know they are faster but some people make it seem like they are so much faster that it isn't even in the same performance class. I'll take a run with a stock 335 any day and I bet I will do just fine, even if I don't win.
